Berkeley Adult School

POSITION:                 Classroom Teacher/Clinical Instructor for Certified Nursing Assistant Program

 

WORK PERIOD:       Monday – Friday, 15-18 hours per week  -

                                    From date of hire through June 14, 2013

 

LOCATION:               1701 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley, CA and clinical sites

 

DESCRIPTION: Working under the program Director of Nursing and Program Coordinator, the instructor will have the immediate responsibility for the development, implementation, management and teaching of a curriculum, which will qualify completing students for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  Teachers will provide classroom instruction as well as training in a long-term care facility and/or a community site.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide students with nursing theory and clinical instruction required for employment and to pass the State CNA certification exam.
  • Must clearly explain both the theoretical and practical aspects of a CNA's job, so that students will be qualified for employment in a hospital, nursing home, or long-term care facility and pass the State CNA certification exam.
  • Should have excellent nursing skills, as well as the ability to communicate knowledge and experience to students.
  • Work as a part of the Adult School Career Technical Education Department team to provide nursing instruction to adults.
  • Support students in setting short and long term goals; be sensitive to adult learner needs and able to create an effective learning environment that inspires self-confidence in students.
  • Design informative lectures and evaluate students through assignments, clinical work, hands-on skills, and exams.
  • Evaluate and report on program effectiveness using objective and subjective measures.
  • Experience in delivering instructional modalities: individualized, small groups, and whole class instruction.  Ability to teach a multi-level class using differentiated instruction.
  • Track and transition students to further education, training, or employment. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with students with recent high school experience and adults of diverse backgrounds.
  • Submits a report of the total number of hours of training the student received in both theory and clinical and the related skills achieved at the completion or termination of a student's training.
  • Accurately and punctually submits all electronic and print  forms and information needed for attendance accounting and grade reporting.
  • Provides effective and positive liaison between Berkeley Adult School and health care facilities and agencies.
  • Attends staff, department, and other meetings as shall be required.

 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training and Experience

Be a currently Licensed Vocational Nurse in California who meets either of the following qualification requirements:

1)  One (1) year nursing experience as a licensed nurse providing direct patient care in a long term care facility in addition to (1) year of experience planning; implementing and evaluation education programs in nursing. OR

2)  Two (2) years of full time experience as a licensed nurse, at least (1) year of which must be in the provision of direct patient care in a nursing facility.  Within six (6) months of employment and prior to teaching a certification program, the instructor shall obtain a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing and evaluation education programs in nursing.  These must be courses approved by the Board of Nursing or courses administered by an accredited educational institution.  A transcript of successfully completed course(s) shall be sent to the Department and shall be used as a basis for approval of the qualifications of the instructor.

 

The LVN or RN must hold a valid non-emergency California Teaching Credential, authorizing instruction to adults in subject area, a preliminary credential, or five years experience in designated area to qualify for Adult Teaching Credential, CTE Credential, Adult or Vocation Education.

 

Other requirements:  All applicants should prepare and submit a CNA modular lesson plan, with clear explanations of what technologies or methods would be use in the delivery of instruction.

Prefer familiarity with California State and Federal Regulations pertaining to Certified Nursing Assistant.  Possession of a valid California driver's license and/or be able to provide own transportation.
