SUMMARY
Join the award-winning Fleet Management Division of the City of Charlotte as a Senior Diesel Technician and become part of a team that keeps one of the region’s most advanced municipal fleets running strong. You’ll work alongside a dedicated group of ASE-certified Medium/Heavy Truck technicians, supporting essential services for both the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.In this senior-level role, you’ll take the lead on diagnosing and repairing a wide range of equipment, including heavy trucks, sanitation vehicles, and construction equipment. You’ll apply your expertise to complex systems such as electronically controlled diesel engines, advanced electrical and braking systems, hydraulics, and specialty municipal equipment.

This is a second shift position.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of heavy truck fleet, construction equipment, sanitation equipment, and occasionally fire apparatus.
Diagnosis and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, on and off-road equipment drivetrains, air braking systems, steering and suspension, and complex hydraulic systems on fleet assets.
Inspect vehicle systems, perform preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of failed components on vehicle's body, chassis and auxiliary systems.
Utilize fleet maintenance software to accurately document work performed.
Communicate with all levels of fleet operations and customers ensuring repairs are completed.
Interpret manuals, electrical diagrams, and diagnostic software.
Understand and follow safety procedures.
Must be able to work weekends and holidays on occasion.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of methods, tools and materials used in maintaining and repairing heavy trucks, heavy truck related equipment, sanitation equipment, and construction equipment.
Understanding of electrical and hydraulic schematics, commitment to life-long learning, keeping pace with new technology.
Ability to effectively be part of a team.
Works in organized, clean and safe manner.
Ability to diagnose defects in a range of equipment including but not limited to heavy trucks, sanitation equipment, construction equipment, and light vehicles.
Analyze, evaluate, and effectively write diagnosis and recommendation of work being performed to complete work orders.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Must be able to pass background and motor vehicle license check.
Ability to work holidays, some weekends, and overtime.
Ability to travel out of town for training on occasion.
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. of equipment and/or tools.
Must have obtain the following licensures within six months of hire (180 days):
o NC Inspection License
o AC Recover and Recycling License
Must have within one year:
o Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree or certification from an accredited technical school/college/university.
ASE Heavy/Medium Truck certifications
Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE.
At least three years of experience related to heavy truck and diesel engine repair.
Minimum Qualifications:
Three (3) years of relevant work experience; or a High School diploma/GED with two (2) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
