The Category Manager – PBE is responsible for developing and executing category strategies that drive profitable growth across the Paint, Body & Equipment segment within a PPG Platinum Distributor network. This role manages product line performance, supplier relationships, pricing, and inventory optimization to ensure market competitiveness and customer satisfaction. The Category Manager acts as the internal subject matter expert for PBE products and collaborates closely with sales, operations, and supplier partners.

 

Key Responsibilities

Category Strategy & Management 

· Develop and implement category business plans aligned with company objectives and PPG Platinum program standards. 

· Analyze market trends, competitive activity, and customer needs to identify opportunities for growth or margin improvement. 

· Evaluate product lines for performance, lifecycle stage, and alignment with market demand.

 

Supplier & Product Management 

· Manage relationships with key PBE suppliers, including PPG and complementary brands (equipment, abrasives, tools, etc.). 

· Negotiate vendor terms, rebates, and promotional programs to optimize profitability.

· Collaborate with PPG and other manufacturers on product introductions, marketing campaigns, and training initiatives. 

 

Pricing & Profitability 

· Develop and maintain competitive pricing strategies that align with margin targets and market positioning. 

· Conduct cost analysis and implement pricing adjustments as necessary. 

· Monitor category performance through gross margin, turns, and profitability KPIs.

 

Inventory & Operations 

· Partner with purchasing and warehouse teams to ensure optimal inventory levels, minimizing excess or obsolescence. 

· Support demand forecasting, replenishment planning, and supplier performance reviews. 

· Lead product rationalization and SKU optimization projects.

 

Sales Support & Training 

· Provide product and technical expertise to sales teams and customers. 

· Support sales initiatives with data-driven insights, product positioning, and promotional activities. 

· Organize vendor and internal training sessions for PBE products and tools.

 

Qualifications 

· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Marketing, or related field (or equivalent experience). 

· Experience: 3–5+ years of category, product, or purchasing management experience — preferably in automotive refinish, aftermarket, or industrial distribution. 

· Knowledge: Strong understanding of PBE products, refinish coatings systems, equipment, and shop processes.

 

· Skills: 

o Analytical and data-driven decision making 

o Strong negotiation and vendor management skills 

o Proficient in ERP systems, Excel, and reporting tools

o Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration

Preferred Experience 

· Prior work with or within a PPG Platinum Distributor network 

· Familiarity with PPG Refinish product lines (Deltron, Envirobase, Delfleet, etc.) 

· Experience in automotive aftermarket distribution or collision repair industry
