SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Accountant's responsibilities include managing all financial transactions, from fixed payments and variable expenses to bank deposits and budgets. The Accountant will prepare financial reports, perform account reconciliations, assist with budget and close processes, conduct internal audits, and assist with annual audits and tax returns. Our ideal candidate is familiar with accounting procedures, has a flair for details and numbers, and has the ability to work well within a team while acting as a collaborative advisor to cost center managers. Ultimately, you will ensure the company's financial security and prevent losses through detailed reports and proactive measures that meet the needs of our students/employees/partners, enable productivity, and align with our company's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Finance Support

  • Assist all accounting transactions
  • Publish financial statements on time
  • Handle monthly, quarterly and annual closings
  • Reconcile accounts payable and receivable
  • Ensure timely bank payments
  • Compute taxes and prepare tax returns
  • Manage balance sheets and profit/loss statements
  • Report on the company's financial health and liquidity
  • Oversee month end close process in a timely manner
  • Audit financial transactions and documents
  • Work with accounting team and external auditors to complete timely audit and tax returns
  • Comply with financial policies and regulations

Financial Aid Support & Student Payment Processing 

  • Post Financial Aid Tuition and Award payments to student accounts and calculate refunds for withdrawn students.
  • Communicate and coordinate all financial aid transactions with the Finance Office.

Work Study Program Management 

  • Advertise and recruit students for Federal and State Work-Study programs.
  • Collaborate with Summit staff to develop appropriate work-study positions.
  • Reconcile bus pass sales and cash receipts with the Finance Office and ensure proper security of cash and cards.
  • Maintain accurate records of transactions using the Anthology Student Database.

Accounting & Administrative Operations 

  • Receive incoming checks from the Office Manager, confirm they match the scan from that day and deposit. 
  • Assist Summit staff with credit card payment requests for travel and online purchases . Reconcile all cardholder reports from Amex with Admin Execs to ensure accuracy and report back to Director of Accounting and Business Support. 
  • Complete General Ledger reconciliations . 
  • Assist with Account Payable entries . 
  • Provide general support to the Finance team with various accounting tasks as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software
  • Advanced MS Excel and Microsoft Suite skills
  • Experience with general ledger functions
  • Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills
  • Strong collaborator, advisor and excellent communicator

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position will work independently and will not have supervisory responsibility. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is a largely sedentary position, requiring the ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time. Extensive use of computer, keyboard and mouse. Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to waist height; and to bend, stoop, walk and reach overhead.

POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is not eligible for overtime pay. Hours of work are Monday thourgh Friday; Core Hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Night and weekend work may be required to meet the expectations of this position. 

TRAVEL

Travel is not expected for this position. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting, Finance, or relevant degree area
  • 2 Years of work experience as an accountant

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in Higher Education environment
