JOB SUMMARY
The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for leading safe, engaging, and effective group fitness classes for members of the McDowell Wellness Center. This position promotes wellness and healthy lifestyles through education, motivation, and exemplary customer service. The instructor ensures a safe and welcoming environment, maintains up-to-date certifications, and supports the mission and values of Ephraim McDowell Health by exhibiting the F.I.R.S.T. values—Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, and Trust.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains positive, supportive attitude, and upholds EMRMC values as they pertain to classes and all other MWC activities and responsibilities.
- Considers and addresses client comments regarding classes, and solves problems that may arise or routes problem to proper coordinator.
- Attend MWC programs and community outreach programs as requested.
- Assures that all members are comfortable with the facility and equipment, and exercising in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Approaches members, clients, and visitors, greets them and answers any questions they may have.
- Establishes and maintains open communication with other fitness and service related agencies in the community.
- Demonstrates knowledge of procedures for handling medical emergencies in the facility.
- Routes requests for purchases, reimbursements, and vacations through coordinator.
- Stays current on new exercise trends, techniques and equipment.
- Maintains all equipment and facilities according to established standards and regulations.
- Reports major maintenance issues, and acts to correct them within the scope of their knowledge.
- Answers telephone in courteous manner
- Is available for flexible scheduling as necessary
- Demonstrate understanding of the office filing system and why each component is necessary.
- Ensures that all MWC guidelines are appropriately enforced
- Maintains current CPR certification
- Is proficient in scheduling members and clients for requested classes, programs, and other functions requiring appointments.
- Is proficient in signing up new members and ensures that all necessary paper – work is completed.
- Has necessary equipment and area prepared before the scheduled start of class. Reports any equipment problems to coordinator. Returns equipment to proper storage areas after completion of classes
- Maintains required certifications for classes taught
- Avoids cancellation of classes
- Is personally responsible for establishing a substitute teacher schedule for self and all other instructors, and arranging for a substitute for planned absences.
- Establish and maintain substitute schedule for unplanned absences for self and other instructors.
- Develop programming based on member needs, and skill level of prospective students.
- Maintains daily “head count” of class attendance and record on appropriate forms.
- Maintains schedule that avoids conflicts with other work related tasks.
- Teaches a minimum of 15 aerobics or group exercise classes in a six day week.
- Serves as a temporary substitute for any class as appropriate
- Assist coordinator with scheduling of classes
- Develop educational component to compliment the participation component of the class or program
- Conduct quarterly education for class instructors
- Participate in educational seminars that will help to develop new programs, or increase the quality of existing programs.
- Is proactive in developing new programming ideas and concepts related to this area and forwards to coordinator for consideration.
- As appropriate, train other MWC associates as substitute teachers for classes.
- Ensure that classes offered address all levels of fitness and comfort of members.
- Arrange for professional certification organizations to conduct continuing education programs in our facility for MWC associates as well as other area instructors and other interested individuals.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The task of this job does not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues but employment may require performing supplemental tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Considerable amount of traversing objects required. Requires moderate to heavy physical exertion on a regular basis. Requires moderate and heavy movement regularly. Must be able to move or position 25 lbs. independently.
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:
Interacts with customers, Associates, physicians, and referring agencies on a routine basis.
EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
Maintains knowledge of all appropriate exercise equipment.
