Position Summary:
The Janitorial Assistant helps keep the Children’s Museum clean, safe, and welcoming for all visitors. This position supports the day-to-day cleanliness of exhibits, restrooms, classrooms, offices, and public spaces. The ideal candidate enjoys working around families and children, takes pride in maintaining a positive environment, and contributes to the museum’s mission.
Essential Functions & Major Responsibilities:
- Perform general cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming.
- Clean and restock restrooms and public areas throughout the day.
- Assist in maintaining public spaces by wiping down surfaces and disinfecting high-touch areas.
- Empty trash and recycling bins and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
- Set up and clean up after museum events, programs, and parties as assigned.
- Monitor cleaning supplies and notify the Assistant Managers of Exhibits & Facilities when restocking is needed.
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs or reporting facility repairs.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain compliance with museum and state safety standards.
- Support the museum team by ensuring a clean, organized, and child-friendly environment at all times.
Requirements
Position Requirements:
- Comfortable working around children and families in a busy, interactive environment.
- Dependable, detail-oriented, and proactive in identifying cleaning or maintenance needs.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and occasional evenings.
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- 1 year of janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping experience is desirable but not required.

- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time, climb ladders, and stairs.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Independent body mobility to access a variety of spaces (high, small, awkward, etc.) with exhibit elements of varying height.
- Ability to bend, carry, reach to the side, front, and overhead, push pull, walk, stand, twist and squat, grab, squeeze are repetitive motions required of the position.
- Use hands to feel and manipulate tools and materials and reach with hands and arms.
- Some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require basic safety precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE.)
- Both indoor and outdoor exhibit spaces – may be exposed to moderate weather conditions.
- Regularly exposed to moderate noise in and around exhibits. Occasionally exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.
This is a part-time position, onsite in Everett. The schedule is Wednesday-Sunday from 11am-4pm. The pay is $21.97 an hour. All part-time employees receive accrued sick time, anniversary appreciation day, free museum membership, discounts, and other museum perks!
