East Grand Forks, MN is a city with a population of approximately 9,000 and located in the heart of the Red River Valley in Northwest Minnesota. It borders Grand Forks, ND and is very close to the University of North Dakota and Northland Community and Technical College. The district's K-12 enrollment is approximately 1950 students as well as a thriving preschool program. The district has four separate school buildings housing grades PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The district also boasts a thriving Preschool Program and lifelong learning opportunities through Community Education.

Position Summary: We are seeking a Language Facilitator to support a specific student beginning as soon as possible. This position is being created to meet the individual communication needs of the student; therefore, its continuation will depend on the student’s ongoing enrollment and needs.
Essential Duties: The Language Facilitator will assist with communication access and classroom participation. The selected candidate must be willing to learn Braille and work closely with our teaching and support staff to ensure the student’s success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Encourage communication: Promote conversation and participation in a target language, ensuring all members of a group or classroom can contribute. May use tools like interactive games and activities to make learning more dynamic.
- Provide comprehensible input: Ensure that language is delivered in an understandable way, using visual aids, gestures, and modified speech as needed.
- Create an inclusive environment: Build a safe and supportive space where learners feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes without fear of judgment. For D/HH students, this includes modifying the physical environment to ensure equal access to visual and auditory information.
- Interpret and translate: In some settings, the role includes interpreting real-time conversations, translating documents, and relaying information accurately between parties.
- Monitor progress: In collaboration with a teacher.
- Offer reinforcement and support: Provide instructional reinforcement to help learners improve their skills.
- Support independence: As students become more proficient, the facilitator will gradually shift responsibility to them, encouraging self-advocacy and greater independence.
- Collaborate with educators and teams: Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff to ensure learners' needs are met and support the overall educational mission.
Qualifications:
- Language proficiency: Fluent or highly proficient in the language(s) they are facilitating.
- Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, and active listening abilities.
- Cultural awareness: Knowledge of the culture and history of the people who speak the target language, as well as an understanding of cultural nuances.
- Adaptability and flexibility: The ability to modify activities, handle unforeseen situations, and adapt to different group dynamics.
- Patience and empathy: The capacity to understand and respect the perspectives and feelings of others.
- Conflict resolution: Skills to help navigate disagreements respectfully and constructively within a group setting.
- Organizational skills: Strong planning abilities to manage schedules, prepare materials, and ensure meetings or sessions stay on track.
- Educational background: While no specific degree is universally required, a background in education, linguistics, psychology, or a related field can be beneficial. In school settings, specialized training and specific credentials may be necessary.
