Lead Custodian & Grounds Maintainer en City of Flint, MI

About the Department

Acts as leader worker in the cleaning, maintenance, and general care of City buildings and facilities; provides direction and training to custodial staff; assists with scheduling, inventory, and inspection activities; performs related work as required.

Position Duties

1. Leads, assigns, and participates in the daily work of custodial staff engaged in cleaning and maintenance of City facilities.
2. Trains and instructs custodial employees in safe work practices, cleaning techniques, and proper use of equipment and chemicals.
3. Inspects work areas for cleanliness, safety, and maintenance needs.
4. Performs a variety of custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and sanitizing restrooms and common areas.
5. Operates and maintains custodial equipment including buffers, floor scrubbers, and carpet extractors; ensures proper use and care by staff.
6. Operates custodial and grounds equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and small power tools and may operator trucks and tractors as assigned.
7. Maintains outdoor areas by removing debris, litter and trash, caring for lawns and flowers, and removing snow and ice from walkways, steps, and parking areas. 
8. Removes debris from parking lots, steps, driveways, and sidewalks.
9. Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; prepares requisitions and monitors usage.
10. Assists with developing and implementing cleaning schedules and special projects such as floor refinishing or seasonal cleaning.
11. Coordinates special setups for meetings, public events, or departmental needs.
12. Ensures compliance with OSHA and City safety policies, including chemical handling and storage requirements.
13. Secures buildings and responds to emergency calls, alarms, or maintenance issues as assigned.
14. Performs other related duties as required.

1. Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, materials, supplies, and equipment.
2. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
3. Skill in planning, assigning, and monitoring the work of others.
4. Ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate custodial machinery.
5. Ability to keep accurate records and maintain inventory.
6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
8. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in carrying out assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
2. Two (2) years of custodial experience with at least one (1) year performing in a lead capacity.  One year of additional custodial experience may substitute for the lead experience.
3. Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
4. OSHA safety or chemical handling certification is preferred.
5. May be required to work evenings, weekends or holidays as assigned.

Other Qualifications

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance.. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
