Job Summary:
The Surgical Technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures. He/she has a clear understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The technologist applies the knowledge and skills required to ensure quality patient care throughout the operation and maintains constant vigilance to preserve the sterile field.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepare and set up the Operating Room according to scheduled surgical procedures.

Review surgeon preference cards; ensure all instruments, equipment, and supplies are ready.

Perform surgical scrub, gowning, gloving, and maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.

Participate in the preoperative “Time Out” and uphold all patient safety standards.

Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.

Handle instruments, retractors, and equipment as directed.

Perform instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the circulating nurse.

Manage and label surgical specimens accurately.

Maintain cleanliness and ensure proper handling and sterilization of instruments per AORN standards.

Inspect sterile items and equipment for functionality and contamination.

Assist with patient positioning, draping, and safe transfers.

Participate in quality improvement, debriefings, and departmental safety programs.

Adhere to infection control, safety, and hospital policies.

Respond promptly to on-call and emergency situations as required
Qualifications
Required: Read, Write, and Communicate effectively in English
Preferred: Patient Care experience in an acute care hospital.
Required: Current Certified Surgical Tech (CST) certification or current Texas LVN license.
Required: Current BLS certification required within 30 days of hire date.
Required: On-Call
