Job Description Summary

Performs complex repair or construction of university facilities or property which require specialized training in a skilled trade (Fire Alarm Systems). Maintenance, repair and troubleshooting fire alarm systems and components. Hours for this position are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Job Description

Essential Duties:

  • Performs complex repair or installation on University facilities and property using expertise acquired through specialized training in a skilled trade (Fire Alarm Systems)

  • Checks fire alarm systems and components; troubleshoots malfunctions and effect repairs

  • Reviews job orders and blueprints or drawings; inspects site and consults with client; determines best method to complete project

  • Estimates amount of materials and equipment needed to complete project; prepares cost estimates; arranges for materials to be at job site

  • Serve as informational/training resource to other staff

  • Maintains and cleans tools and equipment; maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner

  • May serve as liaison to outside contractors and other departments; may prepare some paperwork; may maintain some files

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires nine months training beyond high school in a skilled trade (fire alarm protection) and three years of experience in that trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Driver's license required

  • Requires Ohio Fire Alarm License (or must obtain Ohio license within 6 months of hire)

  • Detection Equipment Fire Protection Certification

Required Knowledge‚ Skills‚ and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the procedures and equipment of a particular skilled trade (fire alarm protection)

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and/or mechanical diagrams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 2 or higher

  • Knowledge of sprinkler systems

Working Conditions:

Frequent standing and walking with some climbing and lifting of materials weighing 50 to 75 pounds. Frequent operation of equipment. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable. Some element of personal risk and exposure to accidents.
