POSITION TITLE: Accountant II
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Finance
SUPERVISOR: Chief Financial Officer
GRADE: E13 $25.17 ($52,366.91) - $37.76 ($78,550.36)
Position Summary:
Under direct supervision the Accountant II is responsible for performing general ledger and related accounting functions for multiple funds, enterprises, and departments owned or administered by the Washoe Tribe. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Prepares accurate financial reports to departments and agencies within and outside of the Washoe Tribe.
· Develops and maintains working relationships with Program Managers and Directors of assigned funds, enterprises or departments.
· Supervises accounting clerks in daily process of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, purchase orders, encumbrances and check requests. Directs workload scheduling.
· Provides technical support to finance department staff for MIP finance accounting software package.
· Serves as departmental liaison with Information Technology department and supervises Finance department in the absence of the Finance Officer.
· Maintains the MIP financial accounting software by installing vendor-provided upgrades, maintaining the chart of accounts, developing report formats.
· Seeks opportunities to improve the utilization of the MIP system within the department.
· Provides system training to new employees and coaching to all team members as needed to optimize the technology.
· Ensures cash balances in accounts are sufficient to clear checks and withdrawals.
· Assists accounting clerks in daily maintenance of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, purchase orders, encumbrances and check requests.
· Prepares accurate monthly financial reports.
· Schedules and prepares financial reports required by funding agencies.
· Compiles reports showing statistics of receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, profit and loss, fund balance and other items pertinent to business or administration operations.
· Applies Washoe Tribal Policies and Procedures consistently when approving or authorizing transactions.
· Reconciles bank statements, credit card reports, general ledger accounts and other data, accurately tying detailed information to ledger totals.
· Prepares and sends monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reports.
· Maintains professional and technical knowledge by: conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
· Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
· Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, accounting, or other related field and three years of experience in general ledger accounting with either a governmental entity or multiple companies owned or managed by one organization; or two years of experience as Accountant I; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.
· Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.
· Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.
· Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
· Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.
· Knowledge of payroll practices, policies, procedures, and reporting requirements.
· Knowledge of bookkeeping and record-keeping practices.
· Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
· Knowledge of computerized general ledger accounting systems.
· Knowledge of Government Contracts and Grants funding concepts.
· Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.
· Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

· Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
· Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and financial reports.
· Skill in handling multiple tasks and meeting strict deadlines.
· Skill in filing and math.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.
