Job Description

To perform fundamental and expanded duties assisting a licensed dentist in the areas of surgical, hospital, and IV sedation; at the direction of the dentist may monitor and/or train Dental Assistant 1 and 2, or dental residents; provide coordination of reception and intake; perform clerical functions associated with a dental office; perform related work.

This is a limited-service position.Length of limited-service appointments are determined by the availability offunds such as grants, alternative funding sources and/or time frames such aspilot projects, alternative funding sources or program termination.

This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Examples of Duties

In addition to the duties outlined on the job specification for Dental Assistant 1 and Dental Assistant 2, may perform the following additional duties under supervision of a licensed dentist:

    1. Dental procedures.

        Preparation of instruments and materials.
        Patient care and document completion.
        Review, evaluate, develop and implement effective service delivery methods, activities, or outputs to identify problems and recommend improvements.
        Review case histories to evaluate effectiveness of standards and policies in serving clients.
        May assist in all phases of: surgery chairside assisting and post operative care.
        Hospital dentistry including credentialing and compliance with hospital protocols and procedures.
        IV sedation including patient preparation and monitoring requirements and devices.

    2. Office procedures.

        Provide regulation oversight in the management of and compliance assurance with all local, state, and federal regulations, in particular OSHA and HIPAA.
        Work with staff in determining trends and resolving technical problems.
        Propose or develop policies and procedures for office coordination.
        Verify accuracy and ensure proper paperwork and procedures.
        Communicate and coordinate with vendors on products, arrange for product demonstrations for residents and staff.
        May act as the dental reception coordinator in the management of the reception and coordination of dental office and staff.

    3. Instruction and/or supervision.

        At the direction of the dentist, may provide instruction and/or monitor the work of Dental Assistant 1 and 2 staff.
        Interview and recommend for hire new employees.
        Assign and prioritize workloads and oversee quality of work for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with established policies, procedures, laws and rules.
        Evaluate, train, and motivate staff by developing performance expectations and objectives.
        May handle employee performance issues and resolve employee conflicts and determine training needs and recommend training programs.
        May provide instruction to dental residents on procedures, techniques, dental auxiliary utilization, and dental procedures which may include monitoring work, providing feedback to supervisor, and assuring quality of care.
        May provide instruction on dental care in a public setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Performing fundamental and expanded duties of a dental assistant.
  • Completing dental radiographs and alginate impressions.
  • Completing dental charting and notations.
  • Performing clerical duties associated with a dental office, regulation oversight (for example OSHA, purchasing, and radiation safety) and materials management OR advanced skills in dental surgery, hospital dentistry, IV sedation, and equipment repair.

Specialty Item

Some positions at ISU may require:

  • Some knowledge of instruction methods. 
  • Spanish and English-speaking skills.

Additional Information

ISU minimum for this classification is $18.10/hour.
