Purpose of Position
Lead and direct a team of data scientists to develop and implement advanced data-driven solutions that drive business performance and innovation. Act on the department and senior management level to inspire and drive digitalization, influencing strategic decisions and managing external contractors. Utilize in-depth specialization in statistical modeling, machine learning, and data analytics to solve complex problems with new methods and technologies, enhancing decision-making processes. Foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration within the team. Ensure high-quality and impactful data science initiatives while adapting to evolving challenges and guiding the team towards achieving set goals.
Key Accountabilities
- Leadership and Team Management: Lead and inspire a team of data scientists in the design, development, and implementation of data-driven solutions. Oversee both internal team members and external contractors, including interns, master and bachelor students, ensuring a cohesive and productive working environment.
- Strategic Project Management: Act on department and directorate levels to manage data science projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery. Drive digital transformation initiatives that enhance business performance, customer experience, and operational efficiency.
- Expertise and Best Practices: Provide deep subject matter expertise in data science, promoting best practices, methodologies, and innovative approaches across the organization. Stay current with technological advancements and industry trends to maintain a cutting-edge approach within the team.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data science solutions align with broader business goals and objectives. Influence and inspire change management and digital transformation across the organization.
- Mentorship and Development: Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. Empower team members to solve known and unknown problems with new ideas, methods, and technologies.
- Data Governance and Quality: Ensure data integrity and accuracy by implementing robust data governance and quality control measures. Uphold high standards of data management within the team and organization.
- Communication and Influence: Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, translating data insights into actionable business strategies. Influence strategic decision-making processes with data-driven insights.
- Vendor and Contractor Management: Manage external service providers and vendors, ensuring their contributions align with project requirements and budget constraints. Supervise external contractors to leverage specialized skills and capacity effectively.
- Infrastructure Development: Drive the implementation of scalable and sustainable data infrastructure in collaboration with IT and other relevant departments. Ensure the data infrastructure supports current and future data science initiatives.
This role requires a combination of in-depth specialization, broad experience, and the ability to inspire and drive digitalization at the departmental and organizational levels. The Manager Data Science will play a pivotal role in strategic decision-making, change management, and the implementation of innovative data science solutions.
Formal Education
- Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees are highly preferred.
Working Experience
- 10+ years relevant working experience
Required Personal and Professional Skills
- Extensive knowledge in statistics, mathematical optimization, and machine learning techniques.
- Strong expertise in DevOps principles, MVC-based app development (Django, React, Python, SQL), app deployment, and hosting (Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Azure).
- Advanced proficiency in Python, SQL, and data model design.
- Experience in the chemical industry is beneficial but not required.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in managing teams and engaging diverse stakeholder groups at various organizational levels.
- Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with a strong drive to achieve and exceed goals.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Proven track record in delivering impactful data science projects within a corporate environment.
- Experience in fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Capability to inspire and drive digitalization at the department and organization level.
