Job Overview: Coordinates and supervises fire prevention, fire investigation and other services for the protection of life and property from fire or other disaster. Staff responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Public Safety are also a requirement of this position. The position involves administrative work in the performance and direction of activities including compliance with administrative codes, laws and ordinances, policies, procedures and/or special instructions, and fire investigations in the Community. The primary focus of this position is fire prevention and fire investigation. It also involves specialized work in the instruction and training of the public and Fire Department personnel in the techniques of fire prevention and fire investigation with the ability to develop, coordinate and conduct an effective program of fire prevention and education.
Create Your Path: The Work You'll Do:
- Manage and administer a comprehensive fire safety program. Prepare emergency planning documents for fire department response.
- Develop and implement procedures and practices for providing public fire education.
- Review plans, conduct inspections, evaluate existing fire conditions, and decrease fire hazards in accordance with codes applicable to fire safety.
- In conjunction with the Indian Health Service (IHS), conduct basic food safety inspections on restaurants, mobile food vendors (food trucks), and temporary food vendors to evaluate existing sanitary conditions, and confirm temperatures, to decrease hazards of food borne illnesses in accordance with applicable FDA food codes and the SMSC Food Safety Ordinance.
- Develop and maintain a variety of records and reports.
- Responds to major emergencies. Performs command level roles. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.
- Conducts and coordinates post fire cause and origin investigations.
- Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials and equipment. Use all required safety equipment.
- Assists with routine service, maintenance and cleaning of public education training props and equipment.
- Will assist in EMS education in partnership with the EMS Coordinator.
- Leads, mentors, coaches, provide guidance, support, and motivation to their team members.
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Technical degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, or other public safety related field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Minnesota Certification Board or IFSAC Firefighter II.
- Minnesota Certification Board Fire Inspector I or equivalent.
- Minnesota Certification Board Fire Officer I or equivalent.
- Possess a minimum qualification certificate as EMT.
- Valid Class D driver’s license may be required with a good driving record.
- Will satisfactorily perform the department daily physical fitness requirements.
- This position is subject to testing for drugs (THC included) & alcohol in accordance with the Federal Department of Transportation Regulations as well as the SMSC’s Drug / THC and Alcohol Policy.
