Position Purpose and Summary

The Senior Safety and Security Program Specialist will play a critical leadership role in coordinating and managing all safety and security operations for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s events and training programs. Events range in size from 200 attendees to more than 20,000 attendees, while training programs consist of smaller, individualized classroom instruction conducted by regional trainers as a part of an authorized training center program. This position will serve as the secondary safety and security liaison to the National Safety and Security Task Force and as back up to the Director of Safety and Security.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Manages and coordinates the Sorority’s safety and security training program for members, volunteers and National Headquarters staff.

• Develops and delivers training materials, orientations and tabletop exercises to enhance awareness and preparedness for Sorority events.

• Maintains training records, evaluates effectiveness and recommends improvements to the safety and security program. 

• Serves as a point of contact for public safety agencies (e.g., law enforcement, fire, EMS, emergency management) to ensure coordination before and during Sorority events, and proper staffing at events.

• Assists with planning and implementing security and emergency response protocols tailored to the needs of each event.

• Supports credentialing, access control and crowd management planning in collaboration with venue and public safety partners, in addition to the National Headquarters building.

• Provides on-site support during events, monitoring radio traffic, documenting incidents and escalating issues as appropriate.

• Drafts incident reports and event safety briefings to support post-event reports and continuous improvement cycles.

• Assists the Director of Safety and Security in resource management, including the allocation of radios, medical supplies, contract personnel and other event safety equipment.

• Assists the Director of Safety and Security in the management of threat analysis and travel risk management utilizing Sorority resources and contacts within local, regional and state public safety agencies.

• Contributes to after-action reviews and recommends strategies to strengthen future event safety operations.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, emergency management, homeland security or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in public safety, law enforcement, military or corporate/event security.

• Demonstrated success managing security for large-scale events. Experience of 10,000+ attendees preferred.

• Experience with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS).

• Proven ability to work collaboratively with public safety agencies and venue management.

• Strong communication, problem-solving and crisis management skills.

• Ability to work long hours, including nights and weekends, during special event assignments (e.g., national convention, regional conference cycle).

• Must be able to travel as necessary for events where staff participation is required.

• Relocation assistance is not available. Must reside within a 50-mile radius of National Headquarters by start of work.
