The Opportunity
Supervise the Maintenance Department, which operates and maintains the Park’s guest restroom facilities, provides custodial service for the staff office buildings and restrooms, as well as upkeep of public exhibit spaces, lawns, and all other public spaces. Maintain the Society’s physical assets including buildings, exhibits, garage, heavy machinery, vehicles, electric carts and all other equipment and properties. Supervise the Horticulture department’s Gardener staff, providing direction in the care of the zoo’s gardens and forest.
1. Perform general grounds keeping including, but not limited to, monitoring and maintaining landscaping, snow removal, litter removal, pathway maintenance.
2. Perform landscape maintenance tasks including grass cutting, weeding, leaf removal, seasonal planting, pruning, hedge trimming, watering, and mulching.
3. Perform general clean-up of landscaped beds and pathways.
4. Perform maintenance and repairs for Aquarium facilities managed by the Buildings and Grounds team including pathways, indoor and outdoor public spaces, and offices as assigned. Operate tools to perform these functions including basic hand and power tools including floor cleaners (e.g. Kaivac), high window washer, buffers.
5. Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds keeping activities (e.g. rakes, shovels, trowels, pruners, brooms, string trimmers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowe.rs, snow blowers). Report need for repairs or replacement to supervisors.
6. Operate vehicles in performance of assigned work including snow plow, fork lift, skid steer loader, van, truck, or other WCS vehicles.
7. Supervise activities of seasonal groundskeepers, organizing tasks, providing instructions, monitoring proper use of tools and techniques, and ensuring safe practices as directed by management.
8. Monitor inventory of supplies and materials. Notify managers when additional materials are needed.
9. Inspect work of outside contractors as directed by manager for conformance with contract and specifications.
10. Secure work areas as necessary to ensure the safety of aquarium guests, staff, and volunteers.
11. Prepare reports as required.
12. Represent WCS in a professional manner. Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, and outside contractors.
13. Actively support, advance, and uphold the Society's policies regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Salary Range
Internal Qualification Requirements
2. Three years' experience with grounds keeping horticultural maintenance. Some classroom training or equivalent preferred.
3. Must successfully pass a background check.
4. Valid driver's license.
5. Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and special events as the schedule demands.
Physical Requirements
The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions. Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to safely use required hand and power tools (e.g. two-way radio, hand truck, shovels, rakes, pruners, trimmers, mowers, snow blowers, ladders). Some tasks require standing for extended periods, climbing, crouching, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
