This Environmental Health Specialist position will primarily be involved in the promotion of public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection and enforcement of state, local and federal health laws and regulations with respect to food and lodging establishments, camps, swimming pools, tattoo artists, child care centers, residential care facilities, schools and other regulated facilities. This position will also conduct plan review and complaint investigations. The EHS will also be responsible for environmental health investigations of lead hazards associated with lead poisoned children or lead hazards in facilities used by children under the age of six.
Hiring Range:
$59,774.00 to $69,488.00
Position Duties
- Inspections of food establishments, lodging, public swimming pools, private and public schools, tattoo artists, residential care facilities, nursing homes and institutions, adult day service facilities, camps and child care centers.
- Complaint investigations
- Childhood lead poisoning prevention investigation and reporting
- Plan review for new and remodeling facilities
- Issuing permits for new and transitional establishments
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Educational outreach and food safety training
- Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures, as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law.
- Knowledge of soil science, microbiology, biology, chemistry, food science, epidemiology, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices.
- Working knowledge of food sanitation, food borne diseases, communicable diseases, vector control, onsite sewage disposal, water supplies, solid waste management and institutional sanitation.
- General knowledge of community resources.
- Working knowledge of the responsibilities of other agencies involved in environmental health concerns.
- Working knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental health concerns.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); or, Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree in public health and one year of experience in the field of environmental health practice; or Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences and one year of experience in the field of environmental health practice. License or Certification Required – Must be eligible to meet the requirements for registration or license as an Environmental Health Specialist as outlined in Article 4, Chapter 90A of the NC General Statutes. Administering the Trainee Appointment- Appointee must be eligible for registration and apply for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern within 60 days of employment. Employee may remain registered as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern until registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or up to two years, whichever comes first.
