Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes Essential Functions):

  • *Assists the Project Director (PD) and Principal Investigator (PI) with the design, implementation, monitoring (data collection/analysis), and refinement of the strategic grant tactics—through the following: 
    1. Project Component: Halau ?Ike or house of knowledge, is dedicated to creating a Professional Learning Community (PLC), where we apply, engage, and teach Early College instructors Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (HCBE) strategies. 
    2. Project Component:   Ho?okahua means to establish a foundation. We plan to establish this foundation of a college going culture to our participants by offering Early College courses that 1) provide positive exposure to the college experience 2) assist in gaining college and high school credit simultaneously and lastly 3) offset the cost of college. 
    3. Project Component: Kipaepae in Hawaiian refers to the stepping stones leading to the hale (house). This component refers to the wrap-around services provided to the haumana (students) at our target schools. The stepping stones represent the process of preparing for college and career pathways and provide college financial literacy, planning and enrollment in Hawaiian Culture-Based Education.
  • *Assists with grant deliverables and adherence to grant regulations, including writing evaluation reports, garnering institutional support, and maintaining transparent communication.
  • *Collaborates with the Grant’s partners as well as UHWO staff and leadership to move forward each of the grant tactics.
  • *Maintains adherence to project timelines, project objectives, and performance measures related to grant goals.
  • *Supports the PD to align with and be current on USDOE policies and grant terms and conditions to ensure that the project operates in full compliance throughout the period of federal support.
  • *Works with the Grant’s evaluator to collect, analyze, and report on data relevant to the achievement of grant goals and objectives, and supervise records management system for data maintenance.
  • *Helps the PD with campus community, external constituencies, community groups, and other institutions of higher education to promote grant activities and leverage support for ongoing grant activities.
  • Supports the PD, as needed, to develop, implement, and refine policies and operational procedures for the Kahawai Ola project.
  • Attends training, as needed or required, to maintain compliance with the Grant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, business administration, humanities, social sciences, or a related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing educational services or assistance to students, including academic advising, academic success, student support programming, student development, or related student services program area; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of student success, student support programs and services, grant program management, or operational technical support as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with program coordination and grant management.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.


Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Experience in working with West O’ahu regional high schools.
  2. Experience in engaging with students and their families through college preparatory workshops.
  3. Demonstrated ability in program development skills, especially in the areas of needs assessment, program design, and program evaluation.
  4. Ability to travel and work outside normally scheduled business hours including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as necessitated by program requirements.
  5. Possess a valid driver's license and access to a car.
  6. Experience in working with varied student populations that include at-risk socioeconomically disadvantaged, Native Hawaiian and/or non-traditional students.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Education or related field. 
  2. The equivalent of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience with responsibilities of providing educational services. 
  3. Experience with grant reporting, mentoring students, and planning student activities. 
  4. Extensive knowledge of community, secondary, and post-secondary educational systems.
  5. Experience in providing direct services to communities in West Oahu.
  6. Familiarity with Native Hawaiian communities, agencies, and organizations.
  7. Working knowledge of Hawaiian language, culture, values and traditions.
