Chemical Hygiene Officer 
Charleston Southern University


Position Overview

This is a 12 month position.  The Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) will develop, implement, and revise plans and procedures for the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials on campus.  The CHO will ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations and file required reports.  The CHO will maintain current inventory of laboratory chemicals and biological materials and ensure safety data sheets are onfile for each.  The CHO will train faculty and staff in the proper handling of hazardous materials and all aspects of laboratory safety.  Depending upon qualifications, the CHO may also instruct science coursework as assigned.


Key Responsibilities

1. Updating and implementing the Chemical Hygiene Plan for all areas of the University engaged in the use of hazardous chemicals and agents.
2. Ensuring our laboratories are compliant with all applicable regulations from agencies such as OSHA, SCDHEC, EPA, and the  DOT.
3. Maintaining the Safety Data Sheets for the Science Building, and overseeing training and inventory control for Safety Data Sheets throughout the University.
4. Training faculty and selected students in laboratory safety, following up with periodic observations of laboratory activities.
5. Monitoring hazardous waste generated by laboratory activities and supervising the proper disposal of the waste.
6. Performing regular inspections of safety equipment, including safety showers, eyewashes, fire extinguishers, spill kits, and first aid kits.
7. Performing monthly general lab inspections focusing on chemical storage, proper container labeling, condition of lab equipment, etc.
8.  Attending University Safety Committee meetings.
9. Maintaining an accurate inventory of chemicals in the Science Building, using our designated inventory control system.
10. Facilitating the maintenance of laboratory equipment by outside companies, such as microscopes, fume hoods, and distilled water systems.

Qualifications


Required Skills and Attributes

A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a science or engineering field (such as chemistry, biology, or chemical engineering).   A bachelor’s or master’s degree from another related scientific field with a strong chemistry background will also be considered.  Experience in a laboratory setting, familiarity with OSHA regulations, and a certification from the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC)  are desirable.
