JOB SUMMARY
The Gas Front Foreman is responsible for directing and coordinating a crew of Gas Free Technicians and Barge Cleaners in performing gas freeing, cleaning, and inspection of barges and tanks in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner. This role ensures that all work meets environmental, safety, and quality standards, while maintaining productivity and supporting company operational goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, instruct, and supervise assigned personnel to complete gas freeing and cleaning operations safely and efficiently.
- Ensure all gas testing, venting, and tank entry procedures are performed in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of gas readings, work permits, and cleaning logs.
- Communicate operational updates and safety concerns to the Supervisor or Operations Manager.
- Oversee and participate in barge and dock cleaning operations as needed.
- Ensure work areas, docks, and barges remain clean and free of hazards.
- Coordinate with customers, vessel representatives, and internal departments to ensure job satisfaction and adherence to project specifications.
- Report equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or environmental incidents immediately.
- Perform minor maintenance or adjustments on gas freeing and cleaning equipment.
- Uphold company safety policies and participate actively in toolbox meetings and safety audits.
- Complete all paperwork, inspection forms, and reports accurately and promptly.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in gas freeing, tank cleaning, or related shipyard/marine operations.
- Prior supervisory or team lead experience preferred.
- Must have knowledge of confined space entry, atmospheric testing, and hazardous materials handling.
- Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to direct small work teams effectively.
- TWIC card required or eligibility to obtain one.
PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
- Work is performed in a barge and shipyard environment with exposure to chemicals, vapors, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to climb ladders, bend, kneel, and lift up to 120 lbs (with assistance).
- Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirators and protective suits.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and shifts as required by operational needs.
In addition, Employees in this position must also be capable of:
- Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
- Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, or sitting for long periods of time.
- Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
- Climbing stairs, and/or vertical ladders of varying heights.
- Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
- Lifting objects of minimum of 10lbs, with maximum single-person lift limit of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying.
- Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
- Visually inspecting equipment and verifying information, often in small print.
- Applying sideways/upward/downward pressure to tighten and loosen hardware.
