ABOUT PORT WILMINGTON:

Port Wilmington is a leading terminal on the East Coast strategically located in Wilmington, Delaware providing turnkey vertically integrated logistics services for containers, RoRo, dry bulk, and breakbulk products.


SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Director, Container Yard Operations, the Container Yard Supervisor is an operations leader responsible for the management, coordination, and execution of the container yard activities. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant movement and storage of containers, oversees the work of Foremen and labor, and collaborates across departments to optimize gate, yard, warehouse, and equipment flows. The Superintendent plays a pivotal role in driving performance, managing union labor relations, and maintaining service standards for customers and carriers. The role will act as an integrator while leveraging internal relationships with container yard, vessel, and warehouse personnel to meet customer requirements


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational Leadership

· Direct all aspects of daily container yard operations, including import/export flows, reefer management, grounded container stacks, and equipment allocation.

· Assist with yard planning strategies to maximize space utilization, reduce container rehandles, and support, warehouse, vessel and gate productivity targets.

· Provide leadership and oversight for container gate and support functions, ensuring seamless coordination across entry/exit, inspections, and equipment control.

Personnel and Labor Management

· Supervise and support equipment operators, clerks, and yard labor teams.

· Coordinate with the Labor Coordinator and union representatives to manage staffing levels and address performance or conduct issues.

· Conduct shift briefings, enforce safety protocols, and lead workforce training and mentoring programs.

Safety and Compliance

· Ensure adherence to all terminal safety procedures

· Conduct routine yard inspections to identify hazards, enforce traffic and equipment protocols, and respond to incidents.

· Support emergency response planning and lead investigations into incidents or near-misses.

Strategic Coordination

· Collaborate with vessel, warehouse, and drayage teams to align container availability and scheduling.

· Work closely with the maintenance and engineering teams to ensure RTGs, yard trucks, and support infrastructure are operational.

· Support IT and TOS (Terminal Operating System) enhancements to improve container tracking, yard layout, and real-time decision-making.

Performance Management & Reporting

· Monitor key yard performance indicators (yard dwell, turn times, stack utilization, rehandle rate).

· Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports for executive management.

· Identify process improvements, cost-saving initiatives, and operational innovations to enhance productivity.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

· Process focused – Ability to drive process improvement and best practices

· Experience with container yard and warehouse operations

· Experience with warehouse operations

· Ability to work weekends when needed

· General knowledge of industry equipment and technology

· Excellent communication skills

· Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

· Safety focused

· Able to motivate and build morale within the group

· Ability to supervise, train and hold associates accountable for performance and results

· Obtain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security

· Must possess a valid driver’s license and a 3-year driving history that is acceptable to our auto insurance carrier.
