Job Title- Senior Database Administrator (Oracle & SQL)

Job Location- Onsite- Newport Beach, CA, USA

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Database Administrator with L3/L4 expertise in Oracle and SQL Server technologies. This role is focused on driving database excellence through automation, performance optimization, high-availability configurations, and security best practices. The ideal candidate will support cross-functional teams and contribute to strategic database initiatives across the organization.

In this role, you will

  • Database Administration & Optimization:
    • Manage and maintain Oracle and SQL Server databases with a focus on performance, scalability, and reliability.
    • Perform advanced performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing.
    • Lead database upgrades, patching, and version control processes.

       

  • High Availability & Disaster Recovery:
    • Configure and manage SQL Server Always-On and Oracle DataGuard for high-availability and disaster recovery.
    • Implement best practices for backup/recovery, data integrity, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Automation & Scripting:
    • Automate routine database operations using PowerShell, Python, or Shell scripting.
    • Develop scripts for patching automation and operational efficiency.
  • Security & Compliance:
    • Enforce database security standards, including password rotation policies and access controls.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, and internal security policies.
  • Architecture & Planning:
    • Contribute to database architecture planning, resource capacity planning, and long-term strategy.
    • Collaborate with infrastructure and application teams to support migrations and cross-platform upgrades.
  • Monitoring & Reporting:
    • Utilize tools like LogicMonitor, Idera, and Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) for proactive monitoring and alerting.
    • Maintain detailed documentation and reports for audits and operational transparency.

What you’ll need to succeed (required skills)

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience with Oracle and SQL Server databases.
  • Strong proficiency in PL/SQL, T-SQL, and understanding of database internals.
  • Expertise in database architecture, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with SQL Server Always-On and Oracle DataGuard.
  • Scripting experience in PowerShell, Python, or Shell for automation.
  • Knowledge of backup/recovery, disaster recovery, and security hardening.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred skills: what will help you stand out

  • Familiarity with cloud database platforms such as AWS RDS and Azure SQL.
  • Experience with monitoring tools like LogicMonitor, Idera, and OEM.
  • Exposure to PostgreSQL databases.
  • Understanding of data warehousing, ETL processes, and cross-platform migrations.
  • Awareness of regulatory compliance in database environments.

     

     

    Certifications (Nice to Have)

     

  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Certification

Salary and Other Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between $73,000 to $112,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
