About the Department

Under general supervision, performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair in a safe and professional manner, performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Performs the full range of equipment maintenance and repair. Performs difficult and complex repair jobs and assumes lead worker responsibility in the absence of the Shop Supervisor.

Position Duties

1. Performs preventive and emergency maintenance and repairs on a variety of light-, medium-, heavy-duty vehicles, motorcycles and equipment with gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas engines; electric drive systems; standard or automatic transmissions; diagnoses mechanical problems.
2. Replaces and/or adjusts parts, such as carburetor, fuel pumps, brakes, filters, distributors; hydraulic cylinders; generators, bearings, radiators, water pumps, and hoses.
3. Diagnoses electrical problems and repairs and/or replaces alternators, ignition systems and spark plugs.
4. Performs oil changes, engine tune-ups and front end repairs; services vehicles with oil, lubricants, grease packs, water, fluids, and fuel; changes tires.
5. Performs emergency repairs on vehicles in the field; may road test vehicles repaired or serviced; uses computer to enter and retrieve data for vehicle maintenance; maintains routine records of work performed; maintain shop equipment and may assist in maintenance of parts inventory; installs identification decals on equipment and vehicles.
6. Repairs power lawn mowers, small gasoline engines, pumps, and miscellaneous equipment and tools; repairs emergency generators.
7. Provides temporary and vacation relief in similar occupational fields as necessary; may be assigned to perform routine assignments and administrative tasks in the absence of supervisor.
8. Documents all work performed; submits weekly reports to supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
Two years of experience as a journey level mechanic engaged in maintenance of gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and electric drive vehicles and equipment common to City operations or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities. Experience with computer-based diagnostics in fleet maintenance operations.

Knowledge of:
Mechanical systems of gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and electric powered automobiles and light equipment; safety hazards and precautions associated with mechanic’s trade; preventive maintenance inspection methods. Techniques and methods of overhauling gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and electric powered equipment and related components, including engines and drive motors, transmissions, suspensions, starting systems, fuel systems, air conditioning systems, and electrical systems; emergency lighting on safety vehicles; siren repair.

Ability to:
Diagnose equipment failure and make necessary adjustments and repairs; perform preventive maintenance; operate drill press, hoist, and other shop equipment; use testing equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and timing lights; work safely; prepare routine records; read and use mechanic manuals, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Other Qualifications

Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License.

Participation in the on-call rotation, being available after-hours with the ability to respond appropriately.
