The BHS/BTC Facilities Manager of Property Services, under the supervision of the Director of Property Services, provides management of technical trades and preventive maintenance information systems. The Assistant Director of Property Services is an integral part of the Property Services Management Team responsible for maintaining facilities for the District. Assistance in the coordination of all aspects of the physical plant upkeep maintenance is an essential facet.

 

The Head Custodian is non-exempt/hourly position that will report to both the Building Principal/Administrator. This position is governed by the Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and Property Services Employees of the Burlington School District. The Head Custodian at the Burlington School District works to provide a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff in which to teach, learn, and grow.  Head Custodians ensure the proper and ongoing maintenance of the school building(s), grounds, school equipment, and custodial equipment. Supervises building custodians. This position will be located at Intregated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler . 

 

The Essential Functions of this position include: 

  1. Plan and oversee all custodial work, and maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  2. Receive occasional communications during off-hours regarding building issues that may arise.
  3.  Assist in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of members of the building custodial staff.
  4.  Provide input to the performance and evaluation of the building custodial staff.
  5.  Maintain an inventory and track the distribution of equipment and supplies.
  6.  Perform and ensure the performance of daily custodial tasks, including but not limited to Sweep and/or dust mop classrooms, Clean corridors, Scrub and disinfect of toilets and floors, Clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains, Dust all school furniture and flat surfaces, and Clean grounds.
  7. Frequent washing of windows, inside and out.   
  8. Change light bulbs, as needed.
  9. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  10. Prompt and thorough removal of ice and snow.
  11. Care for heating, lighting, ventilating, and plumbing systems in the area of responsibility, including regular filter changes.
  12. An active member of a crew in performing custodial duties.
  13. Perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor, including but not limited to lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  14. Promptly report all instances of vandalism to the Director of Property Services and Operations Manager - Custodial Services. 
  15. Care for custodial equipment and promptly report all items which require repairs or servicing to the Operations Manager - Custodial Services, Director of Property services, or Senior Facilities Technician, as appropriate.

The required education and experience for this position include:

  1. Education: 
    1. Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Experience:  
    1. Minimum Required: Minimum Two to three years of relevant training and/or experience. Commercial cleaning experience preferred. Experience waxing and stripping floors, and using a scrubber, floor buffer, commercial vacuum, and other floor machines are also preferred.  
  3. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
  • Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
  • General knowledge: Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
  • Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.
  • Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.
  1. List Specific Skills And/Or Abilities Required:
    1. Ability to maintain a valid State Driver's license.
    2. Ability to use brooms, brushes, mops, power-operated scrubbing machines, vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampooers, wet vacuums, liquid waxes & degreasers, dust absorbers, and other custodial supplies.
    3. Ability to read and write at an acceptable level. 
    4.  Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
    5. Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations. 
    6. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
    7. Ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
    8. Ability to work as part of a team.

The hours for this 1st shift position are primarily 6:00 am - 2:30 pm Monday through Friday during the school year.  Hours are subject to change at any time to reflect facility needs.

 

Working Conditions:
This role involves both office and on-site work in a variety of environments, including:

  • Inside and outside conditions, with exposure to weather, noise, dust, and odors.

  • Physical requirements such as standing, walking, climbing ladders, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, and operating mechanical/electrical equipment.

  • Occasional evening meetings and flexible scheduling are required.

EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS: 

Compensation is based on experience.  In addition to great health benefits and paid time off, this full-time position is an hourly position paid Bi-Weekly. Benefits eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day. BSD Benefits! PAID TIME: Sick Time / Personal Time / Holidays / Vacation As per the Master Agreement.
