About the Department

This is an entry level position that independently performs skilled locksmith maintenance work such as installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of the locks throughout the buildings and other structures of the agency; performs related duties as required.   The employee will work to make sure they are performing this maintenance according to agency policy, government regulations, manufacturer requirements, as well as their own personal knowledge of equipment. The position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence.  To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in driving, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving and team building skills.

Position Duties

  1. Plan and perform preventative maintenance on locks and security hardware.
  2. Install new locks and modify existing locks, including re-keying lock cylinders.
  3. Repair or replace locks throughout agency facilities.
  4. Cut new keys using the correct key blanks and key cutting machines.
  5. Issue keys to authorized agency personnel.
  6. Perform daily inventory checks of assigned toolboxes to ensure tools are properly accounted for.
  7. Maintain and update key control logs accurately.
  8. Adhere to safety and security protocols at all times.
  9. Work collaboratively as part of a team to meet departmental objectives.
  10. Report to work consistently on time, and as scheduled.
  11. Knowledge of the geography and layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, including highly secured areas and exit access areas.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  13. Ability to provide professional customer service to the public and agency personnel.
  14. Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise, and objective reports.
  15. Ability to meet and maintain required licensures, certifications, and agency in-service training requirements.
  16. Ability to adhere to the agency’s core values and professionally represent the organization.
  17. Ability to perform all functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of locksmithing principles and practices preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift, push, carry or pull 75-100 pounds independently.
  • Position has an increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous and infectious materials.
  • Position is based in a secure county detention facility.
  • Interaction with inmates occurs under custody staff supervision.
  • May require occasional overtimeas designated by administration.
