Raba Kistner is seeking a dependable Geotechnical Logger to join our team in AustinTX. The Geotechnical Logger’s primary responsibility will be to direct drilling crews in the field and provide accurate logging of soil borings including field classification of soil samples, documentation of field-testing and documentation of other pertinent data.  Secondary responsibilities will include aiding in field coordination activities including staking, scheduling, permitting and tree clearing and/or assisting the Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Department with performing standard laboratory and field duties.

  • Coordinate with Geotechnical Engineering staff regarding priorities, deadlines, and special work assignments.
  • Review field procedures and verify accuracy and completeness of field results on a regular basis.
  • Collect logging supplies required for each job.
  • Drive assigned equipment to project site.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed boring logs for the submission of completed field reports via paper and/or electronic submission.
  • Turn in logs, site plans, and photographs as completed.
  • Assist driller and roughneck as required.
  • Inform driller of worn or broken sampling tools and any additional tools required.
  • Inform supervisor when logging supplies, notebook, paper, wax, containers, aluminum foil, etc., are in low supply and should be reordered.
  • Assist with site reconnaissance and layout of borings on job sites.
  • Assist with preparation of graphics including but not limited to Boring Location Maps and Boring Logs.
  • Assist the CMT Department with performing standard laboratory and field duties.
  • Immediately notify Supervisor of all potential disputes that may lead to legal claims or litigation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED. 
  • Minimum of one year of comparable experience. 
  • Possess a current valid state-issued driver's license and meet the company's auto insurability requirements. 
  • Must be able to pass the Occupational Safety and Health Act 40-hour training course within three months after employed.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geoscience, or related field

The Geotechnical Logger must have excellent communication skills to interact with clients and staff successfully, having clarity and understanding in order to prevent errors. This includes being able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. You must also have above-average writing skills with handwriting that is accurate and legible for marking and logging samples correctly. Organizational skills are important in this role to utilize company resources efficiently and effectively. Familiarity with personal computer applications is important.

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, frequently required to stoop, kneel crouch or crawl, regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, and talk. Continuously required to use hands and reach. This position requires you to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds to include, but not limited to, sample containers and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, focus vision, depth vision. Work environment includes potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; potential exposure to hazardous dangerous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration; all of which would require employee to follow implement and follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment.

This position may require protracted or irregular hours. Flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs. Work responsibilities require out of town/overnight travel to Raba Kistner office, client offices, and project locations.
