Substitute School Nurse

Provide First Aid and Acute Care: Manage and treat minor illnesses (e.g., headaches, stomachaches) and injuries (e.g., scrapes, sprains) according to established school and district protocols.

Respond to Medical Emergencies: Assume authority in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member with an injury or emergency illness, including adherence to the school's emergency action plan and utilizing an AED, if necessary.

Assess Student Health: Evaluate and assess the health status of students who visit the health room and make sound professional assessments of their needs.

Determine Exclusion/Readmission: Implement school policy on the exclusion and readmission of students concerning infectious and contagious diseases.

Administer Medications: Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications to students according to a physician's orders, parent/guardian consent, and district policies.

Follow Health Plans: Administer care and perform medical procedures based on individual health care plans (IHPs), emergency action plans (EAPs), and student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans for students with chronic diseases or special needs (e.g., diabetes, asthma, severe allergies, seizures).

Manage Allergies: Oversee the management of food allergies and be prepared for the emergency administration of epinephrine for anaphylaxis.

Maintain Accurate Records: Document all student encounters, administered care, medications given, and communication with parents/staff in the designated health record system (paper or electronic).

Complete Reports: Fill out and submit necessary forms, such as accident reports, communicable disease reports, and a log of health room activity.
Qualifications
Required:
• Valid NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Current CPR and First Aid certification (AHA or equivalent)
• Successful fingerprinting and background clearance (Fingerprinting costs covered by the school)
• Ability to provide independent clinical judgment in a school health setting
• Professional, calm communication with students, families, and staff
• Ability to follow medication administration protocols and maintain legally compliant documentation
• Comfortable working with students across a range of ages and health needs
• Commitment to confidentiality and safeguarding student wellbeing
Preferred Qualifications
• Pediatric or school nursing experience
• Familiarity with allergy, diabetes, seizure, and asthma care in school environments
• Knowledge of NYS immunization requirements and school exclusion guidelines
• Additional language proficiency helpful for diverse school communities
