The College of Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities (CoSSAH) at Harris-Stowe State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Sociology. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Sociology or a highly related field. A strong candidate will have teaching experience across sociological subfields, including but not limited to religion/religiosity, urban sociology, criminology, etc. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who exhibit a willingness to grow the Sociology degree program, readily and consistently engaging in recruitment and retention efforts. All candidates should be willing to demonstrate their commitment to working with undergraduate students in a minority-serving institution.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Have the capability to teach up to four (4) three-credit-hour courses per semester
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute course syllabi containing learning objectives (based on several levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy), course requirements, instructor contact, and other institutional and accreditation requirements 
  • Prepare and deliver lectures, lead discussions, and perform other high-impact teaching practices relevant to course content and requirements
  • Conducts appropriate evaluations of students' performances and assigns grades based on such evaluations
  • Maintain a research agenda that informs teaching content and practice  
  • Maintains records of students' grades and attendance according to University requirements 
  • Provides access to students through regular hours and involvement on campus. 
  • Participates in the development and revision of course content, textbook/equipment selection, instructional materials, and teaching assignment/scheduling
  • Provides academic and career advisement and assistance to students as appropriate 
  • Maintains professional skills and subject expertise through study and involvement in professional organizations 
  • Undergo observations, evaluations, and professional development to improve teaching outcomes consistently 
  • Demonstrate a willingness to adhere to all university policies and procedures

 

Minimum Qualifications & Expectations:

  • Earned Ph.D. in Sociology OR a Ph.D. in a highly related field. 
  • Ability and credentials to teach across the subfields of Sociology 
  • Foster growth of the Sociology degree program
  • Experience and credentials for online education, including the imperative of regular and substantive interactions (RSI)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Canvas, Blackboard, or a similar online learning platform
  • A willingness to participate and contribute to recruitment and retention efforts. 
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and culturally competent academic environment
