About the Department

Under limited supervision, to perform field inspections for the detection, control and prevention of mosquitoes, rodents and other vertebrate vectors.

This is a promotional opportunity open only to regular and temporary employees of the County of Santa Clara. 

Position Duties

  • Inspects public and private properties for mosquito breeding sources and vertebrate vectors;
     
  • Makes field identification of mosquitoes and vertebrate vectors;
     
  • Assists in or conducts the surveillance activities for encephalitis, malaria, plague and other vector-borne diseases;
     
  • Applies pesticides as needed;
     
  • Plants mosquitofish in private and public ponds and waterways;
     
  • Operates tractors and other off-road vehicles;
     
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools;
     
  • Accesses database and mapping systems through mobile computing devices;
     
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of specialized equipment;
     
  • Responds to public service requests;
     
  • Prepares daily field service reports and keeps accurate records of pesticide applications and other field activities;
     
  • Collects samples and submits them to the laboratory for identification;
     
  • Assists in the training of lower level staff;
     
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker;
     
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of certificates in the areas of Mosquito Control and Vertebrate Vector Control as required and issued by the California State Department of Health.
 
Possession of a high school diploma or a GED.
 
Possession of a valid California Drivers license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Drivers Permit.

Knowledge of:
  • Laws, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to the control and prevention of mosquitoes and/or rodents;
     
  • Customer service principles;
     
  • Recordkeeping practices;
     
  • Principles of occupational safety and situational awareness related to vector control;
     
  • Common office software applications such as email, word processing and internet browsers.
Ability to:
 
  • Apply appropriate control methods and techniques in the control of mosquitoes and/or rodents;
     
  • Formulate and apply pesticides according to specific directions;
     
  • Operate power tools, specialized equipment and off-road vehicles;
     
  • Clearly communicate and consult with the public, in person or in writing, regarding vector control;
     
  • Interact and collaborate with local public agencies to address vector control issues;
     
  • Keep detailed records and write accurate reports;
     
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
     
  • Perform manual labor.
