Position Overview:
The Development Officer for Milestone and 1866 Reunions sustains the tradition of financial stewardship at Carleton by qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and securing gifts from current and prospective major and planned giving donors in the years leading up to and following the 50th Reunion. This position is part of a successful Development team that collectively raises $40+ million annually from alumni, parents, and friends of the College in capital, annual, and planned gifts.
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefit eligible, long-term temporary, staff position with an anticipated end date in June 2032.
Compensation:
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $86,300 and $89,100. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Build a pipeline of donors for alumni whose class years fall within five years leading up to and following their 50th Reunion. Coordinate with the Director of Milestone Reunions, the Program Director for Post-50th Philanthropy and Engagement, and the Development team to maximize giving from this group. Qualify and cultivate donor prospects, and solicit and close capital, planned, and annual gifts of $50,000 and up.
Partner with 50th Reunion gift volunteers and the Director of Milestone Reunions to ensure a smooth hand-off of individual gift conversations generated by 50th Reunion campaigns. Attend and present at major 50th Reunion gift committee meetings, serving as a trusted advisor to volunteers.
Cultivate and secure major and planned gifts from post-50th alumni (focusing on the 51st through 55th years), coordinating closely with the Program Director for Post 50th Philanthropy and Engagement and other Development staff.
Complete 250 prospect moves annually including 100 in-person or Zoom visits. (Requires occasional weekend and evening work, including Carleton's annual reunion each June and traveling up to 50% annually.)
Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of planned giving vehicles such as gift annuities, unitrusts and estate provisions.
Participate with Development colleagues and other campus leaders in regular planning meetings that advance donor relationships, through cultivation strategies, events, communications, activities, and campaigns.
Carefully review files prior to donor visits and write and file timely and thorough reports, including acknowledgments, contact reports and individual gift proposals.
Education/Experience/Skills:
Baccalaureate degree required, as is a minimum of three years of experience in development, law, accounting, banking, finance, or related fields. In addition, this position requires:
Excellent communications skills, both oral and in writing. Ability to develop rapport and build trust with diverse constituencies.
Strong relationship management abilities: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with donors and stakeholders. Demonstrated skill in working well both with individuals and in a team setting.
Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices: Understanding of donor motivations, philanthropic trends, and legal and ethical considerations. Development experience in a liberal arts college setting and comprehensive campaign experience is preferred.
Discretion and confidentiality: Handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
Flexibility and willingness to travel, including nights and occasional weekends.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
4-6 years of experience in fundraising and capital campaigns is preferred
Physical demands or working environment requirements:
Must have ability to travel overnight frequently (50% of time) throughout the year, both regionally and nationally. Must possess the physical stamina for frequent travel.
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
