About the Department

ABOUT OUR STUDENT WORKFORCE PROGRAM

Mt. San Jacinto Community College District accepts applications for our Student Workforce Program (SWP) for a variety of temporary, part-time, and entry-level jobs. 

The assignment is offered through our Student Workforce Program. This is a great way to learn about working for the District while working on a temporary, at-will basis. During their assignment, many SWP employees find the District is a great place to work and seek permanent, full-time employment through our regular competitive selection process.


SWP CLASSIFICATIONS

Student employment is classified by two categories:

  1. Non-Federal (District):  student employment consists of a student being hired in a specific department, utilizing that department's district funding.
  2. Federal Work Study (FWS):  student employment is a federal student financial aid program authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. Students must establish financial need according to Federal guidelines. The institution receives money from the Department of Education to fund the Federal Work Study program.

Position Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.


The Mt. San Jacinto College Learning Resource Center is hiring for their Peer Educator programs. Information on the three specific programs are listed below:

The SI (Supplemental Instruction) Program seeks motivated, creative, high achieving students to serve as model students and to plan and lead voluntary, structured study sessions designed to empower students in "historically difficult" classes.  SI Leaders must act in a professional and courteous manner in all job duties.  

  • Attend the targeted course (section specific), planning and facilitating SI review sessions weekly
  • Attend mandatory orientation and training meetings
  • Complete and submit all required weekly paperwork
  • Meet with assigned SI Mentor for debrief sessions
  • Complete two peer observations, and assist with any special/seasonal projects

The Embedded Tutoring Program seeks motivated, creative, high achieving students to serve as model students, support student engagement in course materials, and lead tutoring sessions for students enrolled in the in the supported course section. Embedded Tutors must act in a professional and courteous manner in all job duties. 

  • Attend the targeted course (section specific), planning and preparing materials for tutoring sessions
  • Attend mandatory orientation and training meetings
  • Complete and submit all required weekly paperwork
  • Meet with assigned program Mentor for debrief sessions
  • Complete two peer observations, and assist with any special/seasonal projects

The LRC Peer Tutoring Program seeks motivated, creative, high achieving students to serve as model students, support student engagement in course materials. and lead tutoring sessions both face-to-face and online within the Learning Resource Centers. Peer Tutors must act in a professional and courteous manner in all job duties. 

  • Assist students in understanding both academic and non-cognitive skills required to complete tasks and succeed in courses
  • Exemplify successful student behaviors
  • Maintain currency in specified field
  • Attend mandatory orientation and tutor training meetings
  • Assist in Learning Center activities
  • Assist tutors and staff in problem solving and collaborative work
  • Attend mandatory departmental meeting and trainings

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Possess good communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and individually
  • Basic knowledge and skill with computer programs (for example - utilizing the MSJC email system, Canvas, Microsoft Office and Google Suite products) 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


STANDARD:

  • SWP employees must meet the following eligibility requirements:
    • At the time of hire, if you are under 18 years of age, you must present your high school diploma or GED (must be an original or certified copy of the document)
    • Be a U.S. Citizen, a U.S. National or Permanent U.S. Resident
    • Maintain at least half-time enrollment status (*6 units) for each semester employed
      • *3 semester units during summer session
    • A minimum 2.0 GPA 
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community students, faculty and staff,

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability and willingness to mentor, motivate and lead students
  • Prospective tutors for the Writing Center must have completed English 101 course with a minimum B grade in the class
  • Prospective tutors for the Math Center must have completed a Math course with a minimum B grade in the class
  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Completion of one (1) semester at MSJC
  • A minimum B grade in the courses tutored with faculty recommendation
  • Completion of the required training or be CRLA Certified via other tutoring employment, or will complete the MSJC Peer Educator Orientation Training


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Number of Positions Available: 10

Award Year:  2025/2026

SWP Classification:  District Funds


The initial salary placement is $16.50 per hour. The positions are part-time. Student workers may work up to 20 hours per week each semester and up to 28 hours per week during winter break, spring break, and summer.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE

These positions serve the Menifee Valley campus. The current work schedule is flexible, and varies Monday through Friday as determined by the department needs. Work hours are subject to change depending on department needs.
