This position will perform engineer and deckhand duties mainly in the harbors. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure all vessel machinery, equipment and systems are operated, maintained and repaired in a safe and effective manner. Additionally, as a key member of the Vessel Management Team, the Engineer is to ensure adherence to all Company operational guidelines and planned maintenance programs.
What You’ll Do
- Continually maintains a safe work environment on the vessel, implementing Company policies and procedures, and general maritime industry best practice wherever applicable.
- Prepares, checks, maintains, and repairs harbor vessel engine and other machinery properly and safely to include checking fluid levels, taking temperature readings, ensuring engine and steering systems are operational, lubricating various vessel equipment, completing vessel check list, etc.
- Starts up and shuts down vessel engine.
- Notifies the Captain and Port Engineer of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation.
- Performs deckhand duties such as handling mooring lines, setting blocks, splicing lines, etc.
- Performs general maintenance, chipping, painting, interior and exterior bilge cleaning, etc. and sanitary work on harbor vessels as well as boathouse area.
- Maintain engineer log and prepares monthly fuel and lube reports.
- Performs minor, general engine room maintenance to include changing all main engine and auxiliary equipment filters, minor equipment and system repairs, changing or tightening of shaft and rudder post packing, etc.
- Receives and discharges fuel oil, lube oil, fresh water, and waste water to and from harbor vessel under guidelines of regulatory agencies and company policies.
- Reports major equipment/material deficiencies to Maintenance for correction and repair.
- Relieves as an Engineer on Inter Island voyages.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Uses hand and hand-held power tools to perform engineer and deckhand duties.
- Works in engine room and on deck in wet, humid, and noisy conditions and is occasionally exposed to exhaust fumes and dust.
- Frequently uses paints, solvents, and thinners.
- Normal work week varies with vessel assignment and schedule - may work up to seven (7) days per week.
- Normal work hours vary with departure time - normal watches may vary to comply with U.S.C.G. regulations and responsible carrier program.
- Ensure safety or vessel, barge, cargo, and crew.
- Must be able to receive and follow instructions and be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisory personnel.
- Must have proficient knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion equipment, and other machinery.
- Must be able to read, interpret, and understand manufacturers' equipment manuals, drawings, and blueprints.
- Must be able to troubleshoot and repair marine hydraulic, electric, and mechanical equipment.
What We're Looking For
- Valid drivers' license.
- Must possess a Merchant Mariner's Document (z-card) with an OS and Wiper endorsement AND either a Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) - any rating (all QMED endorsements) OR junior engineer endorsement, minimum.
- STCW 95 is preferred.
- Must complete the company's Personnel Qualification Standard (PQS) for Engineer within 90 days of effective hire or promotion date.
- Must have High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year marine diesel engine experience required; Two (2) years marine diesel engine experience preferred.
