Candidates hired will work a schedule of up to 1500 hours per fiscal year. CalPERS retired annuitants are not eligible to apply.

The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill any Regular, Limited Term or Temporary, Part-time vacancies for the duration of the list.

Position Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Work as part of a streets maintenance crew; patch pavement and seal cracks; remove graffiti; perform bikeway maintenance.

Construct forms; pours and finishes concrete.

Operate construction equipment such as dump trucks, rollers, motor graders, front loaders, pavers, excavators, forklifts, bulldozers, graders, aerial lift trucks, water trucks, backhoe, traffic line removers, hydro/vacuum trucks, sweepers and power tools such as compressors, rotor hammers, jack hammers, paint sprayers, asphalt grinders, and concrete saws.

Clean up debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys and streets; perform work in emergency situations as required.

Inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains.

Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.

Pick up and transport debris and refuse to each dumping site as required.

Maintain markings, legends, and guardrails.

Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.

Transport equipment/materials to job site.

Apply pesticides in a safe and efficient manner.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public, using principles of good customer service.

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

When assigned to Signing

Design, fabricate, repair, install, replace, remove, install and clean traffic signs as needed.

Clear brush and obstructions from signs.

Maintain inventory of signing and marking supplies.

Contact vendors for information on supplies.

Requisition supplies as needed.

Answer questions and provide information to the public about city signing procedures.

 

When assigned to Markings:

Participate in painting and striping of City streets and curbs; install pavement markers.

Minimum Qualifications

Street Maintenance Worker I

Knowledge of:

Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.

Safe work practices.

Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Storm drain, culverts, and retaining wall maintenance and installation.

Ability to:

Learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.

On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; remember street names and general geographic areas.

Intermittently, sit while completing forms and reports; load/unload equipment off truck; walk around job sites; kneel and bend while examining streets; climb in and out of trenches; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 75 pounds or less.

Read technical manuals.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Learn to operate appropriate equipment efficiently and safely.

Work regular shifts as assigned; may be assigned to on-call, call back, and/or emergency schedules that include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Experience and Training

Experience:

No experience is required. Some experience in streets maintenance installation and repair is highly desirable.

AND

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.


License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California Class A driver’s license with a tanker endorsement by end of probationary period.

 

Street Maintenance Worker II

In addition to the qualifications for the Street Maintenance Worker I:

Knowledge of:

Methods, techniques, tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, signs, and storm drains.

Methods, techniques, tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in traffic painting, striping and sign installation.

Methods, techniques, tools and the operational characteristics of thermoplastic applications.

Ability to:

Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.

Use and operate a variety of vehicular and stationary equipment, hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and related equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.

Operate equipment skillfully, safely, and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations; diagnose and resolve equipment problems.

Identify and report USA locations.

Complete required reports.

Understand and complete work orders for asset management system.

Read and interpret basic maps, and drainage maps.

Effectively control traffic; draw traffic control plans; set up, maintain and take down traffic control equipment.

 

Experience and Training

Experience:

One year of responsible experience performing street maintenance duties comparable to that of a Street Maintenance Worker I in the City of Roseville.

 AND

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

 

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California Class A driver’s license with a tanker endorsement by date of appointment.

Possession of an I.M.S.A. Level II certification within two years of appointment for signing and marking assignment.

If you are offered a position with the City of Roseville, as a part of the pre-employment steps, applicants must provide a foreign degree credential equivalency certificate from an approved member agency above.  Applicants who do not provide verification, will be eliminated from further consideration.
 

SELECTION PROCESS:

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination. The applicant’s experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List. Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations. 

Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process.  

Some positions require the clearance of a comprehensive Police Department (PD) background check within 12 months of appointment.  The City may appoint candidates to positions prior to clearing the extensive Police Department background check, and in those circumstances the candidate will be advised in advance that security access in the information technology systems will be limited to non-PD related systems until PD clearance is received, and if the candidate ultimately does not clear the PD background it will result in release from City service without appeal rights, in accordance with Personnel Rules 3.04.050.
