This is specialized instructional and technical work focused on providing EMS continuing education countywide and delivering training to new Paramedics and EMTs through the County’s EMS Academy program. Employees in this classification are responsible for classroom instruction, skills demonstration, scenario-based training, and student evaluation. 
 
Work involves preparing lesson plans, delivering instruction in both online and classroom settings, conducting practical skills assessments, and supporting students in meeting educational and clinical objectives. Assignments require professional knowledge of EMS protocols and clinical practices, as well as the ability to engage learners and promote professional growth. Work is performed under the general supervision of EMS Training Coordinators or departmental management. 

*Must be able to pass and maintain a CJIS Level 2 background check*

What Will You Do?

  • Deliver EMS continuing education courses and EMS Academy training for EMTs and Paramedics. 
  • Conduct classroom lectures, online instruction, and skills demonstrations. 
  • Facilitate scenario-based training and evaluates clinical decision-making. 
  • Administer written and practical examinations to assess student performance. 
  • Prepare lesson plans and instructional materials in accordance with established curriculum and local protocols. 
  • Provide feedback and mentorship to students to support learning and professional development. 
  • Assist in maintaining accurate training records and completion documentation. 
  • Support EMS Coordinators in the implementation of training programs. 
  • Perform related instructional duties as assigned. 

What Do You Need?

Experience:  EMS experience as a Paramedic, Field Training Officer, or EMS instructor.

Degree:  EMS, business, public administration, health care administration, or related field.

  • 6+ years of experience as described above.
  • Associate’s degree and 4+ years’ experience as described above.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years’ experience as described above.
  • Masters or higher-level degree and some experience as described above.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Paramedic certification. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License. 
  • Must be able to work a variety of schedules, including compulsory assignments during emergencies, disasters, or special events. 

Highly Desirable 

  • Experience as an EMS instructor, Paramedic preceptor, or Field Training Officer. 
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional best practices. 
  • Familiarity with online and classroom instructional technologies (Articulate 360, Prezi, Powtoon, Captivate, or Canva). 
  • Above average skill level Word, Outlook, Excel. 
  • Clinical experience in advanced life support (ALS) care. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of automated information systems, office procedures, and data processing. 

  • Skill in interfacing effectively in a complex and dynamic work environment, verbally and in writing, with clinicians and stakeholders. 
  • Skill in administering the EMS Training program, serving as an EMS training instructor, Paramedic preceptor or Field Training Officer.
  • Skill in good listening and communication. 
  • Skilled in educational instruction or training coordination. 
  • Skill to prepare clear and comprehensive technical reports, recommendations, and proposals, verbally and in writing. 
  • Skill in preparing and monitoring complex, technical operational, training, and budgetary reports.
  • Skill in reading and comprehending clinical protocols, administrative laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to emergency medical services.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a highly collaborative and proactive manner with direct involvement with partners and collaborators. 
  • Ability to work independently on complex tasks and non-routine matters.
