About the Department
organizing and supervising a varied program of recreational activities at the PMRC, Stanton Community Center
and off site locations. This position requires an individual who can initiate and conduct youth and adult
development activities that includes organized sports, leisure time activities and provide educational support in
the form of homework assistance. Participants in the activities range from pre-school children through adult
groups with emphasis on youth. Much of the work involves the promotion and stimulation of a desire for
recreational activities. The ability of the Recreation Associate to inspire confidence and to be accepted by all
types of groups is very important. The employee works under general supervision.
Position Duties
? Assists in planning and conducting special events for all age groups covering such activities as parties,
tours, tournaments and field trips;
? Directs active games such as volleyball and table tennis, kickball and basketball;
? Serves as an advisor to club groups of young adults and teenagers;
? Assists in organizing and conducting competitions, displays and other group activities;
? Maintains records and assists in the preparation of periodic and special reports;
? Solicits and oversees work of volunteers.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
? Knowledge of community recreation programming for all ages in various communities;
? Ability to effectively communicate to participants, co-workers, and other community groups;
? Good judgment, strong written and oral communication skills;
? Some knowledge of the principles and concepts of community recreational work;
? Ability to instruct or coach individuals and groups in a given sport or specialized activity in various
communities;
? Ability and interest to interact with youth by leading recreational activities in a positive setting;
? Carry on an activity in a broad phase of the program;
? Cooperate with public and private groups and agencies and the general public;
? develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and with activity participants,
? And, to develop interest and participation in community center activities with varied age groups in
various communities;
? Good physical condition;
Minimum Qualifications
Some experience working in community programming, leading recreational activities, or working with youth.
Completion of a standard high school course, some college level course work in recreation administration,
physical education or related field, preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which
provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Other Qualifications

Visual ability: Sufficient to operate assigned cleaning and maintenance equipment, and to read written instructions and
prepare written reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
Hearing ability: Sufficient to understand radio transmissions or loud speaker, conversation with other individuals both in
person and over a telephone.
Speaking ability: Sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person, over a telephone and over a radio.
Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described.
