Waco District Special Jobs is looking for a Crew Chief who wants to combine their experience and leadership skills with their knowledge and expertise of transportation maintenance to improve the condition of our roadways. Special Jobs duties range from roadway maintenance, operating heavy equipment, concrete bridge repair, flow-able fill, brush cleaning and much more. Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of      crews.

  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.

  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.

  • Inspects roads while en-route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.

  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.

  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.

  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.

  • Operates light and heavy equipment.

  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.

  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.

  •   Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of    problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving    leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application, with "N" endorsement within 90 days of hire.

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  •  Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials  

  • Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures

  •  Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments

  •  Incident management procedures

  • Inventory/stock control procedures

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes

  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures.

  •  Operating light and heavy highway equipment 

  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations

  •  Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

  •  Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment

  •  Prioritizing and organizing work assignments

  • Interpreting applicable information

  •  Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

  •  Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade

  •  Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

  •  Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

  •  Delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
