About This Opportunity
The City of Hillsboro Public Works Department is looking for an entry-level GIS & Asset Management Technician to join a team of GIS professionals serving the geospatial needs of the City’s Transportation, Stormwater and Sanitary Sewer utilities. This role works both independently and collaboratively with a team in the office and in the field with primary duties involving creating, editing, and publishing utility asset GIS inventories. This work forms the foundation necessary for data-driven decision making throughout the Public Works Department.
What You Will Be Doing
The GIS and Asset Management Technician roles serves primarily as the one to input data into our existing database structure, edit data where needed to maintain accuracy, and interact with our field crews for edit requests. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment is used to verify and update utility GIS data. This role is heavily focused on building and improving the accuracy of our data, a critical function that informs our decision makers throughout the City.
General Duties & Responsibilities Include:
- Digitizing utility assets into enterprise GIS
- Reviewing and processing as-built record drawings
- Collecting data in the field using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment
- Completing GIS edits requested by maintenance and operations staff
- Producing paper and web maps

Successful Candidates
Successful candidates for the GIS and Asset Management Technician position will be able to effortlessly navigate the technical aspects of the role such as web and paper map production, ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap software, and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or asset management software. Simultaneously, this role has a strong internal service component that requires exceptional critical thinking skills to efficiently process an internal customer’s request, interpret their need, and think ahead to deliver a better product than what may have been initially anticipated.
Highly desired skills/experience include:
- Two years of ArcGIS Pro software experience
- GIS certificate
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or asset management software
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to engage non-technical staff when conveying complex technical concepts
- Willingness and desire to work productively with department staff from all levels and disciplines to interpret and deliver on their technical needs

Acceptable Experience and Training
- Associate’s degree in a related field; and two years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing/Certifications
- Driver’s license with a safe driving record required
- GIS Certificate preferred
Bilingual Incentive Pay Available
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.Commitment to Equity
