About the Department
The City of Jacksonville is looking to fill positions within the Streets Division and are in need of dependable individuals to assist in the maintenance and repair of the City's storm water/streets system. The Streets Maintenance Worker performs responsible semiskilled manual work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools and small equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $30,713.07 - $49,139.79.

Position Duties
There are multiple areas within the Streets Department a Maintenance Worker I may work in, and they are as follows:
1. Closed Structure Stormwater Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
Installation and Construction:
• Lay and install pipes, ensuring proper line and grade using tools like laser levels and grade rods.
• Excavate trenches and backfill them, sometimes using shoring and lifting equipment for deep excavations.
• Construct and repair structures like manholes, catch basins, and headwalls.
• Sealing pipe joints and fittings to prevent leaks.
Inspection and Maintenance:
• Inspect pipes and infrastructure using cameras and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems to check for damage, blockages, or illicit discharges.
• Perform routine cleaning of pipes, drains, and canals.
• Conduct inspections of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) and structural components.
• Respond to citizen complaints and inquiries about flooding and water quality.
Repair and Cleaning:
• Repair existing pipes, structures, and eroded areas.
• Clean out pipes and infrastructure using VacCon trucks and other methods.
• Remove sediment, litter, and other debris from the system and surrounding areas.
• Perform minor repairs and address minor leaks.
Equipment and Safety
• Operate and perform maintenance on various equipment, including trucks, excavators, backhoes, and loaders.
• Adhere to strict health and safety standards, including confined space entry protocols.
• Ensure traffic control measures are in place, such as cones and signs.
• Operate equipment safely, paying attention to overhead utility lines and traffic.
2. Streets Pavements Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
• Operating heavy equipment: Driving and operating equipment like pavers, tamping machines, and sweepers to apply and compact paving materials.
• Spreading and raking materials: Spreading and leveling materials like asphalt, gravel, and clay to prepare surfaces for paving or repair.
• Tamping and finishing: Using tools or compacting equipment to finish and smooth surfaces to the proper grade and thickness.
• Assisting with construction: Using handheld tools, shoveling, and helping with the general construction and repair of roads and driveways.
Maintenance and safety
• Traffic control: Acting as a flagger to warn motorists of work zones and setting out cones and signs.
• Vehicle and equipment maintenance: Performing preventative maintenance on their equipment and vehicles.
• Site cleanup: cleaning debris from roadways, including litter and materials from rock or mud slides.
• Ability to withstand physical demands, including lifting materials and tools and working in various weather conditions.
• Working outdoors in conditions that can be hot, cold, or noisy.
• Frequently wearing protective and safety gear.
3. Open Structure Stormwater Section
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Include:
• Assists in the inspection, maintenance, clearing and repair of the City’s storm water ditch system.
• Utilizes basic carpentry, masonry and landscaping skills to complete daily tasks.
• Operates various light and medium powered tools and earth moving equipment as needed/directed by Division Staff.
• Hauls materials and transports personnel in Division pickups and dump trucks.
• Assists response/resolution to hazardous conditions in the Right Of Way (ROW), which may include, retrieval of dead animals in the ROW damage/debris, glass/foreign objects within the road, overhanging tree limbs or other hazards.
May be called upon in case of a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the Citizens of Jacksonville.Minimum Qualifications

Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; some knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
