About the Department
The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department is seeking an experienced gardener to help maintain the community gardens program in Davis. The City currently has three garden sites, one on Fifth Street, second site located within the Cannery Development and a third location that is part of the Grande Village development. The ideal candidate for this position likes working outside in the garden and with people while supporting their interest to grow and nurture healthy organic gardens.
Hours: 15-20 hours /week, varied days and times, must be able to work some weekends
Status: Temporary part time, no benefits. Applicants will be screened according to most relevant experience for this position. Those most qualified will be invited to an individual or small group interview.
Position Duties
Typical Responsibilities (includes but is not limited to):
- Clear abandoned plots of weeds and debris before assigning to new gardeners
- Assist with meetings and communication with renters to plan work parties in the garden and to address issues
- Ensures equipment and facility is safe and properly prepared and maintained, arrange for broken or unsafe equipment to be repaired or replaced
- Enforce policies, resolve disputes and other issues as they arise
- Assist with on-going volunteer events at the garden and ensure proper documentation is recorded and maintained to track volunteer hours and project work
- Maintain common areas and recruit gardeners to assist with these tasks
- Notify City staff of irrigation repairs needed and communicate with staff on other infrastructure issues
- Remove trash
- Help educate gardeners on Integrated Pest Management practices
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
- Knowledge of basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in gardening work
- Knowledge of basic principles and practices of work safety
- Knowledge and experience with organic vegetable gardening
- Creative problem solving abilities
- Sensitivity to and understanding of the experience of people with limited incomes
- Dedication to promoting equality and diversity
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to demonstrate energy, enthusiasm, and creativity in the job position
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and communication with community garden patrons, City staff and community members

This is an active position requiring the ability to sit, bend, squat, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch; occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs, frequent lifting or moving objects up to 25 lbs; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with customers and other staff; and visual acuity to record information accurately and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens, traffic, and slip hazards near water, and exposure to blood borne pathogens. Must be able to exercise appropriate caution when working near parks, pedestrians or other traffic areas.
