GENERAL SUMMARY

Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs on wastewater plant equipment and vehicles. Assists with plumbing and electrical repairs. Removes stoppages from outfall lines and collection systems. Completes special projects as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

 

  • Performs routine maintenance on plant equipment. Repairs and replaces motors and gearboxes. Rigs and removes machinery from the water. Repacks and cleans pumps and maintains blowers and rotors. Cleans clarifiers, diffusers, bar screens, skimmers, walkways, and exposed metal and concrete surfaces at sewage treatment plants. Creates irrigation systems. Replaces PVC piping.
  • Completes preventative maintenance on plant equipment according to established schedules. Oils and greases machinery. 
  • Maintains vehicles, including performing oil changes, replacing brakes, and changing tires.
  • Repairs and maintains electrical equipment. 
  • Troubleshoots equipment and diagnoses machinery. Clears refuse. Assists with removing stoppages from sewage treatment plant outfall lines and collection systems.
  • Operates power tools, gasoline mowers, and a variety of hand tools.
  • Assists with special projects, including hauling, landscaping, welding, and fabrication.
  • Performs related work as required.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

  • This position does not directly supervise any employees.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in the operation, maintenance, and construction of collection systems; or a combination of experience and education that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


  • Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class “D” Wastewater Operator License or a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have one (1) year of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator II.


  • Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class “D” Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have two (2) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator III.


  • Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class “C” Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have three (3) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator IV.


  • Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class “B” Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have five (5) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator V.

*If selected, level will be determined by Manager based on internal assessment of education and experience.


Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Must obtain a Class “D” Wastewater Certificate within one (1) year of employment; Must have or obtain within one (1) year of employment and maintain a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.

☒ Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
