About the Department
THE VACANCY:
This recruitment is open and promotional, meaning all are welcome to apply and current employees in permanent positions are eligible to receive seniority credit and promotional placement once passing all exams.
There are currently three full-time vacancies in the Maintenance and Operations Department (8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 12 months per year).

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Manager, Grounds Maintenance, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Class C driver's license.

Performance Exam/Qualifications Appraisal Interview: 50%
An eligibility list will be established for successful candidates which will be used to fill open positions during the life of the list.
Examinations and interviews held to create the eligible list will be conducted virtually, using different online/internet platforms that require video recording or conferencing capabilities, as well as access to a computer with an internet connection and basic Microsoft Office Suite Software.
The virtual written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 17th. The in-person performance exam/qualifications appraisal interview (oral exam) is tentatively scheduled for the week of December 8th. You will be contacted via email, as indicated on your application, regarding your ability to participate in the examination phase of this recruitment.

Minimum Qualifications
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; hoe and pull weeds, rake leaves; grind tree stumps; pick up debris following assigned tasks; sweep litter from walk and driveways; edge sidewalks.
Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, hedges, fields and other turf grounds; prepare and fertilize soil; prune trees.
Operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as tractors, trucks, weed eaters, mowers, sweepers, power pressure sprayers, chain saws and other equipment used in grounds maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools.
Drive a District vehicle to and from sites to conduct work; load trucks with trimmings and trash and drive to a trash disposal area.
Communicate with District employees to coordinate work; assist other maintenance and grounds personnel including repairing asphalt, mixing concrete, installing athletic equipment and assisting in the repair and installation of sprinkler systems as assigned.
Operate and maintain a variety of power grounds equipment such as field mowers, bobcats and attachments, trucks, skip loaders, grinders, roto-tillers, trenchers and forklifts as assigned by the position; operate other grounds equipment including mowers and edgers as required.
Service large field mower as assigned by the position; check, adjust, lubricate and clean equipment; perform minor repairs as needed; assure cutting blades are properly functioning.
Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform routine maintenance on equipment as needed.
Perform general pest control duties as assigned by the position; maintain records of herbicide and insecticide usage.
Respond to emergency grounds or custodial issues as required, including drain flooding, product delivery, downed trees and other issues.
Perform routine work in the preparation, lining, marking and dragging of athletic fields and related areas.
Assist in the moving and arranging of bleachers, furniture and a variety of other equipment for special events.
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.
Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.
Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.
Herbicides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance.
Proper operation of heavy grounds equipment.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding.
Operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.
Perform routine maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Observe health and safety regulations.
