- Supervises and participates in the investigation and detection of crime such as visiting crime scenes; searching for and preserving evidence; searching for and apprehending criminals; interviewing and interrogating prisoners and witnesses; investigating reports of missing persons; interviewing complainants and taking proper action to dispose of complaints.

Job Purpose
Supervises and participates in police work involving the protection of life and property and the enforcement of criminal and traffic laws and local ordinances. The position involves responsibility for the efficient and prompt performance of the work of an assigned squad of police officers within the department’s divisions. A police sergeant frequently participates in the work performed by his or her superior officers with all the authority and responsibility of that position.
Job Environment
Instructions on new assignments are received from the police sergeant’s superior officers and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures. However, a police sergeant works independently in performing regularly assigned duties and acts with a minimum of supervision in meeting emergencies and directing members of his or her squad. Employees in this class are required to perform their duties under all conditions of weather. Hazards to personal safety arise from personal, mechanical, and natural sources, and include possible loss of life.
Essential Job Functions
As of December 1, 2025, applicants must have four (4) years of employment as a uniformed officer and/or investigatory member of the West Hartford Police Department.

The suggested references listed below may comprise source material for a major portion of the written examination, but the exam will not be limited to the following announced sources:
No applicant will be promoted to this position, however, if he or she fails to satisfy all physical requirements for the position as determined by the Chief of Police and a physician selected by the Town Manager.
Any employee promoted as a result of this examination must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of six (6) months before the promotion will be considered permanent.
The written exam is scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. You will be notified by email if you are qualified to take the written exam. The Human Resources Department will provide the exam location to qualified candidates by email. The oral boards are expected to be held by November 25, 2025. More information will be released closer to the date.
