Position Summary

Responsible for providing and documenting training activities and developing, revising, and implementing the use of training documents including SOPs and processes to support the overall training program. Provide hands-on training for DCM husbandry staff in the care and husbandry for multiple animal species in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulations and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service, to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University. Ensure that all personnel are trained and follow all SOPs, safety practices, and applicable regulations and policies. May train other staff, including researchers, and veterinary technicians.

Job Description

• Train new hires on the key duties of their position including following SOPs and rules and guidelines set by federal and state regulations and the IACUC.

• Conduct initial and periodic skill/knowledge verification assessments for cage wash staff, animal caretakers, veterinary technicians and other personnel.

• Report to supervisors on the status of individuals' training and needs; provide documentation assessing training.

• Train research and veterinary technical staff in certain procedures including hands-on activities and facility orientation tours for staff seeking facility access.

• Assist with the AALAS Certification and continuing education program.

Physical Effort:

• Must be able to lift 50lbs and pass a pre-employment physical exam.

• Typically standing or walking.

• Repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement (PC Typing).    

• Frequent lifting (25 lbs. or more).

Equipment:

• Lab/research equipment.

• Simple hand tools.

Special Requirements:

• Appropriate vaccinations and hearing protection and other PPE are required through participation in the Occupational Health & Safety Program.

Salary Range

$17.10 - $29.09 / Hourly
