Job Description

The Lead API (570/510) Inspector is responsible for leading and executing the site’s inspection program in alignment with the Chief Inspector’s strategy and guidance. This position combines technical inspection expertise with program ownership to ensure mechanical integrity, regulatory compliance, and safe, reliable operation of fixed equipment across the facility.
This role is based in the San Antonio area and requires the ability to respond to emergencies or leaks within one (1) hour when notified.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the site’s inspection program, ensuring compliance with API, ASME, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Perform and/or oversee API 510 and 570 inspections across all units and develop detailed inspection reports and recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance on NDE practices, evaluation, and quality assurance.
  • Support and participate in Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Review Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings for accuracy and define NDE requirements for piping and pressure equipment packages.
  • Develop and maintain Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and inspection scopes for projects and turnarounds.
  • Provide turnaround and maintenance support, including torque verification/sign-off and inspection during repairs.
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and reliability to prioritize inspection findings and ensure timely closure.
  • Support continuous improvement of inspection work processes and Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) integration.

Qualifications

  • Active API 510 and API 570 certifications required.
  • 5–8 years of inspection experience in refining, petrochemical, or related industries.
  • Demonstrated Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) experience and technical understanding.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Must pass DISA background, drug, and alcohol screenings.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and TWIC card.
  • Local to the San Antonio area with the ability to respond to site emergencies or leaks within one (1) hour.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, self-motivated, and team-oriented.

Working Environment 

  • Conditions may include working inside and/or outside.  Prepare site, materials, and tools. Loading, unloading, assembly and disassembly of materials, tools, and equipment. May work in office environment or in plant around machinery with moving parts and moving objects.  Working near radiant and electrical energy.  Working closely with others or working alone.  Working at height, including drops below ground level. Working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation. May work in conjunction with customer representatives, inspectors, and other contractors.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit ,kneel, push ,stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder,  grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders ,identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and operate motor equipment.

Tools and PPE Requirements

  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computer and related equipment, calculator, special instrumentation, hand tools, power tools, air tools, telephone, and automobile.  Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.  Must abide by safety guidelines and regulations.
