Substitute school nurses are considered part-time and will work as needed.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION - SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE

 

Full Day:   8am to 3pm at assigned school for $140 per day.

Half days:   8 to 11:30am or 11:30-3:00pm for $70 per day.

 

Accountability: Reports to County Wide Nurse Supervisor and School Principal at each school assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Maintain current LPN or RN License in the State of Tennessee.
  2. Preferred three years nursing experience.
  3. Nursing experience in a pediatric setting, with physician or hospital setting.
  4. Maintain current CPR Certification with yearly skills check.
  5. Maintain current First Aid Certification.

Nature of Work:

  • All substitute school nurses are to provide health services to the individual school(s) where they are assigned as needed county wide. The substitute school nurses are to follow the students’ Individual Health Plan.
  • Plan and assist with student health needs, special procedures, provide first aid and care for the sick and injured, assist with medication administration, lice screenings when indicated, and other nursing care as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Is knowledgeable of and follows school policies, including BOE policies, nursing protocols, standing orders, and TBOE guide for school nurses.
  • Obtains physician orders for prescribed medications or procedures. Contacts physician for verification or clarification of orders, as needed.
  • Perform special procedures for students and maintain documentation.
  • Maintain student records in electronic medical records (Aspen), i.e.: documents student visits, medications, conditions, health reports, communications, referrals, etc.
  • Administer medications to students with documentation.
  • Assist students with self-administered medications with documentation. Documents students' proficiency of self-medication or procedure.
  • Keep in contact with parents as needed regarding special procedures and medications.
  • Provide screenings and emergency first aid to sick and injured students and personnel.
  • Assess and evaluate the health of students, including referrals for medical evaluation and treatment as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school & students/staff related information and records.

     Conduct head lice screenings to individual students with symptoms of head lice and rechecks per school policy. Notify other school nurses for screenings of siblings and close contacts following guidelines provided. Follows FERPA & HIPAA guidelines and does not check classrooms.

  • Identify special health issues of students and notify personnel as needed.
  • Serve as health consultant and resource person in health-related matters by interpreting health and developmental status of students for the parents, school personnel and the students.
  • Provide case management for individual students to access and coordinate resources prn
  • Provides health counseling and/or health education for students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Recommend modifications in the educational program to school personnel when health or developmental status of a student indicates, as needed.
  • Uses universal precautions in the clinical setting when administering patient care or first aid, i.e. wear gloves, hand washing, clean/sanitize the clinic and supplies after use, adhere to professional nursing dress code:
    1. Nursing uniforms or scrub tops and pants, shirts with collars may be approved by the nursing supervisor. Uniforms should be neat and clean. Lab coats must be worn over street clothes, including sweaters or jackets.
    2. Appropriate and clean clinical shoes: i.e.: Nursing shoes or tennis shoes; no open toed shoes, no sandals, no flip flops, no high heels.
    3. Jewelry should be minimal e.g. small earrings, wedding band and watch. Nail polish, artificial nails, perfumes, and cologne should not be worn in the clinical setting.
  • Refer deficiencies of immunizations and physicals to the nurse supervisor.
  • Attend professional development training as required.
  • Maintain professionalism when dealing with students, staff, and parents at all times.
  • Adhere to professional, legal and ethical guidelines for nurses.
  • Reports all medication or nursing care errors to nurse supervisor as soon as possible, and completes a medication error or incident report, to be sent to nurse supervisor.
  • Notifies nurse supervisor of problems or changes in students' condition or IHP.
