Position Summary:

 

Schafer Industries is currently seeking an Import/Export Compliance Specialist to join the team. The role is based in Fredericktown, Ohio although candidates could be based in South Bend, IN or St Louis, MO.

Job Summary:

 

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Import/Export Compliance Specialist at Schafer assists in the company’s import and export activities to ensure we comply with all applicable laws and regulations.  This position applies existing rules and regulations to the company’s processes to ensure compliance, which includes the preparation and submission of required filing and reporting documentation.  The role will support trade compliance for multiple locations in the U.S. and collaborates with team members and partners.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Prepare and maintain accurate documentation related to shipments, including customs declaration and bills of lading. Manage the process for REACH, conduct Blands reporting, and monitor package labeling and product exports. Maintain Country of Origin for products, components, materials and spare parts in the material master data
  • Risk Assessment: Identify and escalate potential risks in trade transactions and propose tactics to mitigate these risks.
  • Classification and Valuation: Ensure documentation of the correct classification of goods under the Harmonized System (HS) codes and accurate valuation for customs purposes.
  • Internal Audits: Assist with regular audits to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communication with Authorities: Prepare required documentation as necessary to liaise with government agencies such as U.S. Customer and Border Protection.
  • Customer Interactions: Prepared information to address customer inquiries and customer audits.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Experience in trade compliance or international trade is preferred.  Familiarity with trade regulations and compliance software is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, HTS classification, valuation, and FTAs is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

The role typically involves working in an office setting, with occasional travel for industry conferences, training or to visit the Schafer facilities.
