Under general supervision, the Police Uniform Seamstress is responsible for performing alterations and repairs on department-issued uniforms to ensure proper fit, functionality, and appearance. This position utilizes industrial sewing equipment to attach MOLLE strips, patches, name tags, and insignia. Additionally, the role provides limited support to the Police Quartermaster’s Office, including uniform issuance and basic inventory assistance.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs alterations, repairs, and modifications of police uniforms using industrial sewing machines and specialized equipment.
- Applies department-approved insignia, patches, stripes, and name tags to garments in accordance with Police Department standards.
- Measures personnel to ensure proper fit and functionality of uniforms.
- Assist with organizing, issuing, and documenting uniform items in coordination with Resource Management staff.
- Receives, sorts, and stores uniform shipments and fabric supplies in compliance with department procedures.
- Coordinates pick-up and delivery of uniforms with vendors and internal staff.
- Provides exceptional customer service to department personnel and works collaboratively in a team-based environment.
- Utilize basic PC applications and inventory systems to document transactions and maintain digital uniform records.
- Maintains cleanliness and adheres to safety standards in the sewing workspace.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Compile information from written or digital record and perform special projects as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of basic uniform tailoring and alteration techniques.
- Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of sewing techniques and safe use of sewing machine.
- Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill in measuring, marking, cutting, and stitching fabric accurately.
- Skill in performing multiple tasks at once.
- Skill in reading and interpreting garment specifications and uniform standards.
- Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
- Skill with organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to Lift or moves uniform bundles or supplies weighing up to 75 pounds independently, with the ability to lift heavier items with assistance.
- Ability to maintain and upkeep a professional appearance in an approved city issued uniform.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to perform garment alteration with accuracy and consistency.
- Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
- Appearance and hygiene must meet requirements as defined in the city personnel policy and in police general orders.
- Exercises discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.
- Performs a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Works independently under general instructions.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience with and working with uniforms and alterations
- Specifically experience with industrial sewing equipment
- Preference for experience with Sworn Uniforms (Police, Fire, Military, etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Experience working with law enforcement, fire, or military uniforms.
- Knowledge of placement standards for police patches, rank insignia, and name tags.
- Experience using embroidery machines (manual or computerized).
- Familiarity with inventory tracking systems and uniform management software.
- Knowledge of basic inventory and garment issuing practices.
