About the Department
Performs skilled maintenance and repair tasks on plant and pumping station equipment at a Water or Wastewater Plant.
Position Duties
- Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
 - Exercises knowledge of mechanics and skills in mechanical repair tasks.
 - Makes daily checks of pump station and takes corrective action when necessary.
 - Repairs plant breakdowns, inspects operating conditions, and completes oral and written work orders from supervisor.
 - Disassembles, repairs and reassembles pumps, valves, motors, air compressors, chlorinators, piping, and other plant machinery and equipment.
 - Inspects, repairs and/or replaces gears, sprockets, chains, bearings, couplings, shafts, motors, seats, and discs on grit machines, pumps, valves, clarifiers, and other equipment needing service.
 - Inspects and repairs furnaces in a Wastewater or Water plant.
 - Cleans water or wastewater systems, flumes, chambers, settling basins, clarifiers, wetwells, clearwells, membrane tanks, chemical tanks, holding tanks and thickener tanks.
 - Shovels, sweeps, cleans, and uses a jack hammer.
 - Operates light automotive vehicles and power-driven equipment.
 - Uses torches to cut steel and related projects.
 - Cuts and threads steel pipe with pipe threading machine.
 - Paints equipment and buildings.
 - Runs snow removal equipment, shovels sidewalks, clears steps, tops of clarifiers and other surfaces.
 - Repairs and maintains plant odor control system, rebuilds and repairs chemical feed pumps, flow regulators, pressure regulators, and associated odor control equipment.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
- Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required
 - At least three (3) years experience in the maintenance and repair or pumps, motors, valves, pipes and related water and wastewater equipment is required.

Licenses and Certificates
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania State Driver’s License is required.
 
Bureau of Water:
- Possession of or ability to obtain a PA DEP Class E Water License no later than 18 months (Full-Time) in this position.
 
Bureau of Wastewater:
- Possession of or the ability to obtain Collection System Certification Class E from the Department of Environmental Resources or pass test of such certification no later than 18 months (Full-time) in this position.
 
Environmental Conditions
- Indoors, environmentally controlled.
 - Outdoor, exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperature.
 - Exposure to noise, pollution.
 
Safety Equipment Used or Needed
- Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.
 
Comments
- Requires standing, bending, walking, sitting and climbing in the performance of duties up to eight (8) or more hours a day.
 - Works around motorized or moving equipment and machinery.
 - Requires occasional lifting up to 80 lbs.
 - Requires the operation of automotive vehicles and other power equipment.
 - Requires working under adverse conditions, which may involve unpleasant odors.
 - Requires working long hours and must be available to handle emergency situations after hours, weekends and holidays.
 - Requires the use of tools such as a screwdriver, pliers, wrenches and other tools.

Other Qualifications
- Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
 - Ability to understand and use hand, power tools and measuring devices essential to work performed.
 - Ability to perform basic electrical work including but not limited to cleaning, inspecting and replacing bearings on electrical motors and making terminations on circuits up to 480 volts.
 - Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
 - Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
 - Ability to understand and use of blueprints and the ability to interpret operation and maintenance manuals in repairing plant and pumping station equipment.
 - Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.
 - Proven ability to work independently, or as part of a team and to collaborate successfully with others is required.
