The Department of Environmental Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Occupational and Environmental Exposure Assessment. The selected applicant will gather data and conduct data analyses investigating the effects of environmental exposures, including but not limited to air pollution, metals, and playing surfaces. The research fellow will work within the Department of Environmental Medicine and the Institute of Exposomic Research.

 

Eligible candidates may be supported by the T32 Postdoctoral Research Training Program in Environmental Pediatrics (T32HD049311).

Responsibilities

  • Collect, process, and interpret spatial data from a variety of sources, including satellite imagery, GPS, LiDAR, and field surveys.
  • Design and maintain Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and layers; develop tools and dashboards to support geospatial visualization and reporting.
  • Create high-quality maps and visualizations to effectively communicate spatial data findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Analyze aerial photographs and satellite imagery to detect land use patterns, vegetation changes, urban growth, and environmental degradation.
  • Conduct geospatial fieldwork, including geodetic surveys and GPS data collection, as necessary for project support.
  • Write technical reports, spatial assessments, and presentations; ensure documentation and metadata standards are upheld.
  • Publish original research in peerreviewed journals.
  • Work with Pi seeking additional funding from NIH, NSF, and other organizations.
  • Attend study meetings, occasionally present research in progress reports.
  • Supervise and collaborate with graduate students on their research.

Qualifications

A doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD) is required. Additional qualifications include:

  • PhD or DrPH in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, quantitative risk assessment, or other quantitative related fields.
  • Training in biostatistics, environmental sciences, and epidemiological methods.
  • Programming skills in R, Stata, SPSS and/or SAS (R preferred).
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in spatial statistics and data interpretation.
  • Experience with remote sensing tools and geospatial data platforms.
  • Familiarity with programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL) is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and track-record of peer-reviewed publications.
