POSITION:           Special Education Paraprofessional (Contracted through EduStaff)

• High School Diploma.
• One of the following is preferred:
  • Associate’s (or higher) degree
  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education
  • Achieve a passing score on the Basic Skills Test of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)
• Experience working with school aged children is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Proficient reading and writing abilities.
• Ability to work effectively with children and take direction.
• Physically able to lift 50 pounds.
• Pleasant, cooperative and flexible.
• Willing and able to toilet students and provide other custodial care needs.
• A positive attitude to foster the proper atmosphere for a supportive classroom environment.
• Willing to learn and perform health care needs, after training.
• An understanding of Assistive Technology and the ability to support students with disabilities in the classroom.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Works with individual students to reinforce learning of material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual student, their needs, interests and abilities.
• Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
• Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
• Helps the student master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
• Guides independent study, enrichment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
• Serves as the source of information and helps any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Communicates with Special Education teacher essential information to keep her/him abreast ofstudents’ assignments, behavior, and information shared by the General Education teacher.
